Research Assistant

This position has a term length of one year plus one day from the date of hire.

Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

The Research Assistant will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and project lead to support research activities within the NSERC Alliance Society project.

The Research Assistant will assist with collecting experimental data, maintain accurate laboratory records, assist with sample labeling and storage, and support routine laboratory safety and organization.

Research and laboratory experiments: 80%

• Prepare polymer, coagulant, flocculant, pH-adjusting, salt, buffer, and suspension solutions according to approved procedures.
• Prepare model suspensions, tailings samples, wastewater-related samples.
• Conduct coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, dewatering, and related solid-liquid separation experiments.
• Assist with characterization of polymers, suspensions, supernatants, sediments, and flocs using laboratory instruments and standard procedures.

Administration and team support: 20%

• Attend research meetings and discussions.
• Assist with ordering requests, sample tracking, and organization of project materials.
• Prepare SOPs.

• Minimum requirement is a 2-year technical college diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and relevant laboratory experience may be considered.
• Experience working in a chemical, materials, environmental, or engineering laboratory.
• Knowledge of solution preparation, dilution calculations, pH adjustment, sample preparation, and safe chemical handling.
• Ability to follow written protocols and maintain accurate laboratory records.
• Basic understanding of water treatment, coagulation/flocculation, polymers, colloids, suspensions,filtration, or solid-liquid separation.
• Ability to use common laboratory equipment such as balances, pipettes, pH meters, stirrers, glassware, filtration devices, and analytical instruments.
• Competency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and basic data organization.
