Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta is one of Canada’s leading academic health centres for pediatric specialty and subspecialty education and research. Working closely with the Stollery Children’s Hospital and community pediatrics in Northern Alberta, we are committed to meeting the unique needs of our community and providing exceptional care for infants, children, youth, and families.

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate performs high-level translational research focused on the mechanisms, treatment, and prevention of pediatric cancer adverse outcomes and metastasis. Working with irreplaceable global patient blood and DNA samples, this role oversees lab operations, manages high-complexity research projects, mentors lab staff, and collaborates with national, international, and pharmaceutical partners.

  • Research & Methodology: Design individual experiments, troubleshoot protocols, determine optimal research methodologies, and independently execute complex research activities under PI direction.
  • Data & Publications: Oversee data collection and conduct advanced analysis. Draft initial scientific manuscripts, present findings at seminars/conferences, and contribute to grant and contract proposals.
  • Lab Management & Compliance: Handle daily lab operations, equipment maintenance, supply ordering, and compliance with Environmental Health & Safety regulations.
  • Supervision & Mentorship: Supervise, train, and guide technical staff, students, and post-doctoral fellows in safety, equipment operation, specialized techniques, and protocol troubleshooting.
  • Collaboration: Maintain professional interactions with external academic partners, industry contacts, and affiliated research institutes.
  • PhD degree or equivalent is required in biochemistry or related subject
  • 5+ years of extensive specialized experience in a research environment
  • 5+ years of experience with ELISA, cell culture, western blotting, RT-qPCR, PCR
  • Experience in a pediatric cancer research environment is considered an asset
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
  • Experience in developing instruments and research proposals
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
  • Trained in WHMIS, TDG, chemical spills, and CHEMATIX
  • Equivalent education and experience may be considered

This position offers a comprehensivebenefits package with an annual salary range of $65,369 to $81,719.

The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule E of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
