Location - This role is in-person at North Campus, Edmonton.

Position Summary

The Edge Network Analyst will work with the other members of the Network Operations Team to ensure the availability and reliability of University network infrastructure, carrying out network maintenance tasks following UofA standards and operational procedures.

Operations:

  • Monitors the daily operation of networked systems and applications. (including network switches, wireless access points, uninterruptible power supplies, racking, etc.)
  • Follows predefined procedures on the installation, testing and troubleshooting of the network infrastructure.
  • Patches and performs routine maintenance of network hardware.
  • Installs, tests, implements, removes, and troubleshoots network cabling, hardware and other equipment (including network switches, wireless access points, uninterruptible power supplies, racking, etc.)
  • Splices, terminates, and tests fibre optic cable.
  • Creates labels and documents cabling infrastructure.
  • Maintains accurate records of the University's campus network.
  • Performs routine configuration hi everyone changes for network switch ports, including physical cabling as required.
  • Performs switch software upgrades, replaces defective equipment, and maintains wiring closets to high standard for maintainability and sustainability.
  • Monitors network for stability, proper configuration and usage.
  • Researches and stays up to date on network cabling analytical tools
  • Maintains network cabling tools

Design:

  • Assists in the design, documentation, and implementation of new and/or improved edge network connections.
  • Provides accurate records of installation and repair work for reporting. Prepares network documentation.

Issue Resolution:

  • Analyzes and resolves assigned network problems.
  • Responds to trouble calls; diagnose and develop solutions/repair.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves network connectivity issues.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues and if required, provides on-call support for network, hardware, software and/or computer configuration. (including network switches, wireless access points, uninterruptible power supplies, racking, etc.)

Network Development:

  • Contributes to the development of installation procedures and standards. and submits recommendations for Improvements.
  • Assists in evaluating new technology.
  • Contributes to the planning for installations.

Project Work:

  • Serves as a project team member for projects.
  • Follows predefined procedures on the installation, testing and troubleshooting of the network infrastructure.
  • Patches network hardware.
  • Installs, tests, implements, removes, and troubleshoots network cabling, hardware and other equipment (including network switches, wireless access points, uninterruptible power supplies, racking, etc.)
  • Splices, terminates, and tests fibre optic cable, determines pass/fail and corrects issues
  • Creates labels and documents cabling infrastructure including patch panels in TRs
  • Works with clients, F&O Project Managers and Cabling/Edge Team Leader to both understand business needs and ensures project designs are updated correctly before the designs are sent to contractors for implementation
  • A Bachelor of Science in computing science, engineering or equivalent experience
  • Advanced Diploma, Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications
  • Experience testing fiber using visual inspection, visual fault locator (VFL), optical loss test set (OLTS), and optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) devices
  • Experience using cable toner, network connectivity tester
  • Experience in an enterprise networking environment
  • Experience within an educational environment
  • Well developed analytical and organizational skills, with strong problem solving capabilities and a good understanding of business processes
  • Excellent verbal, written communication skills, problem-solving, analytical, time management skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability in managing competing priorities and workloads, consulting, and executing work assignments simultaneously to achieve results in a complex ever changing environment is essential to meet deadline
  • Certifications:
    • Cisco Certification Achieved Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
    • CFOT® Certified Fiber Optic Technician certification, is an asset
    • Achieved Network+ and A+ certification; is an asset
