Associate Director, Scientific Communications Strategy & Excellence

Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated, scientifically grounded, and collaborative Associate Director of Scientific Communications Strategy & Excellence (S&E) to serve as a therapeutic-area lead for integrated engagement planning and execution across Alnylam’s medical channel ecosystem. Reporting to the Director, Scientific Communications Strategy & Excellence, this role will partner closely with Medical Directors, Scientific Communications, Field Medical, Medical Excellence & Operations, Legal/Regulatory/Compliance, Customer Experience & Innovation (CX&I) Omnichannel, and other cross-functional partners to translate therapeutic-area priorities, audience insights, and measurable belief/behavior outcomes into integrated scientific communications planning (ISCPs), coordinated engagement approaches, and execution-ready roadmaps across Alnylam’s medical channel ecosystem.

This position is open to remote working and will be primarily located at 675 Kendall, Cambridge, MA while in the office.

Key Responsibilities:

• Shape and advance the integrated scientific communications strategy for assigned therapeutic areas, ensuring medical objectives, key milestones, audience insights, and stakeholder belief/behavior outcomes are translated into prioritized ISCP decisions, engagement strategies, and execution-ready planning.
• Lead activation and orchestration of Alnylam’s medical engagement ecosystem, aligning owned medical channels, congress-related digital experiences, third-party scientific engagement platforms, field-enabled resources, and other fit-for-purpose approaches to advance medical strategy and support prioritized scientific communication objectives.
• Bring technical fluency in medical engagement systems, platform infrastructure, orchestration flows, and content enablement processes, partnering as the Medical Affairs lead with enterprise capability teams to ensure engagement solutions are scalable, compliant, measurable, and aligned to medical priorities.
• Drive outcome-based alignment with Global and Regional Medical Affairs teams to define priority audiences, desired scientific belief/behavior changes, content dissemination opportunities, stakeholder barriers, and engagement opportunities that inform a coordinated, optimized omnichannel approach.
• Partner with Scientific Communications, Field Medical, Medical Directors, CX&I Omnichannel, Strategic Technologies, Legal/Regulatory/Compliance, and other cross-functional stakeholders to align priorities, resolve decision points, and enable coordinated execution of Alnylam’s digital channel initiatives.
• Establish and maintain governance, intake, prioritization, and operating frameworks that define roles, responsibilities, decision rights, handoffs, and standards for consistent therapeutic-area planning and execution.
• Use audience insights, performance data, stakeholder feedback, and external trends to inform evolution, prioritize engagement opportunities, test planning assumptions, and recommend improvements to scientific communications effectiveness.
• Monitor emerging trends in scientific communications, medical digital engagement, HCP information-seeking behavior, AI-enabled search/discovery, and stakeholder-used clinical information resources to identify LLM-driven opportunities, risks, and implications for how Alnylam’s scientific information is discovered, interpreted, and acted upon.
• Manage vendors, agency partners, scopes of work, purchase orders, budget planning, forecasting, tracking, and reconciliation in support of prioritized initiatives, ensuring resources and investments are aligned to therapeutic-area priorities and measurable engagement outcomes.
• Establish leading indicators and performance review inputs that enable teams to assess observed engagement outcomes against planning assumptions and adapt actions, investments, and operating plans based on what is learned.

Qualifications:

• Doctorate degree (MD, PharmD, PhD) or advanced scientific degree with a strong scientific background and minimum of 7+ years of relevant Medical Affairs, Scientific Communications, Medical Communications, Omnichannel, or related biopharmaceutical experience.
• Strong understanding of Scientific Communications, Medical Affairs planning, scientific engagement, and compliant dissemination of medical information across global and regional teams.
• Strategic thinker with strong communication skills, executive presence, and ability to synthesize complex scientific and operational information into clear recommendations, plans, and leadership-ready updates.
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional planning in a highly matrixed environment, influence without authority, and build trusted partnerships with all cross-functional partners.
• Experience building or improving governance frameworks, intake/prioritization processes, RACI/ways-of-working models, and operating rhythms that enable efficient planning and execution.
• Advanced project and portfolio management skills, including the ability to manage multiple therapeutic-area priorities, timelines, vendors, approvals, risks, and competing stakeholder needs.
• Data-oriented mindset with ability to interpret engagement analytics, stakeholder feedback, audience insights, and performance measures to guide planning, optimization, impact reporting, and test-learn-adapt decision-making.
• Experience with medical digital ecosystems, owned medical channels, third-party scientific engagement platforms, congress digital experiences, and/or modular content approaches is desired/preferred.
• Technology-savvy with familiarity using platforms and tools such as Veeva Vault, Power BI, GA4, Snowflake, content management systems, and other analytics or workflow platforms is desired/preferred.
• Collaborative, proactive, solution-oriented, and comfortable operating in ambiguity while maintaining high standards for scientific quality, compliance, operational excellence, and stakeholder alignment.

The pay range below reflects the full-time base salary range we expect to pay for this role at the time of posting. Base pay will be determined based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, skills, and education. This role is eligible for an annual short-term incentive award (e.g., bonus or sales incentive) and an annual long-term incentive award (e.g., equity).
