As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take ownership of engineering activities from concept through to detailed design and manufacture. Working closely with project, commercial, and engineering teams, you will be responsible for producing robust engineering solutions while supporting project delivery, technical bids, and design substantiation activities. This role has quite a flexible remote location, but it requires lots of travel across the UK to different Nuclear sites and travel to France.
This role is ideally suited to an engineer with 5-9 years of experience in mechanical design, strong proficiency in SolidWorks, and the ability to communicate effectively in both French and English.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering & Design
- Produce engineering designs and associated technical documentation.
- Develop concept designs, full 3D scheme designs, and detailed manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
- Produce engineering substantiation through hand calculations.
- Review and verify engineering designs to ensure technical compliance and quality.
- Conduct peer reviews of concept designs, CAD models, manufacturing drawings, and engineering calculations.
- Deliver engineering activities in line with project schedules and technical requirements.
Project Delivery
- Manage the day-to-day technical delivery of allocated projects.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating closely with senior engineering leadership.
- Coordinate engineering activities and support the task management of assigned engineers.
- Ensure technical deliverables are completed to the required quality, cost, and schedule targets.
Commercial & Tender Support
- Support the Commercial team with technical input for bids and proposals.
- Review and interpret customer technical specifications.
- Produce technical responses and develop accurate engineering estimates for tender submissions.
Continuous Improvement
- Support the development of engineering capability across the business.
- Contribute to internship, graduate, and apprenticeship programmes.
- Promote engineering best practices, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support organisational change within a fast-paced and highly regulated environment.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing.
- Ensure compliance with relevant UK and European standards.
- Uphold data protection requirements and confidentiality standards.
- Promote diversity, inclusion, and ethical business practices.
Required Skills:
- 5-9 years of professional experience in mechanical design engineering.
- Fluent in both French and English.
- Strong experience using SolidWorks for 3D design and detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Experience producing engineering calculations and design substantiation.
- Ability to interpret technical specifications and translate requirements into practical engineering solutions.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Experience managing engineering work packages or projects.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience within nuclear, defence, aerospace, energy, or other highly regulated sectors.
- Familiarity with engineering standards, design verification, and technical governance processes.
- Experience supporting technical tenders and commercial proposals.
- Previous mentoring or leadership experience.
- Knowledge of French Nuclear regulatory boards and regulations.
