Role Summary

As the Community Program Specialist, you'll embed community across the ALX talent journey, from selection and recruitment through learning, transition, and alumni engagement. You'll own ALX's virtual community presence, including eHub, along with the community's newsletters and communications, working cross-functionally with Community Managers, Marketing, Learning, and other teams to deliver one consistent, member-driven experience, in person and online.

Specific Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Design and implement strategies to embed community at every stage of the ALX talent journey (selection, recruitment, learning, transition, alumni).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Marketing, Recruitment, Learning, Alumni) to ensure community-driven approaches are integrated into their workflows.
  • Develop frameworks and toolkits/playbooks to support Regions  in driving community initiatives.

Community Integration

  • Ensure the community is member-led and city-driven, with central support for strategy, frameworks, and resource allocation.
  • Implement one ALX community: bring learners and alumni into a single, unified community rather than treating them as separate audiences, so the transition from learner to alumnus feels continuous, not like leaving one group to join another.

Online Community & Digital Engagement (eHub)

  • Own and manage eHub, the ALX virtual community platform, as the digital home for learners and alumni, keeping it active, well-moderated, and useful.
  • Set up and maintain the eHub structure (groups, channels, resources) so it matches the talent journey and supports member needs at every stage.
  • Drive day-to-day engagement on eHub: start discussions, welcome new members, surface relevant content, and moderate conversations in line with community guidelines.
  • Track and report on eHub engagement metrics (active users, posts, response times, sentiment) and use the data to improve the platform over time.
  • Work with stakeholders so that eHub complements other member touchpoints instead of duplicating them.
  • Manage eHub interest groups and support interest group leaders to manage the spaces as well as programming.

Newsletters & Communications

  • Plan, write, and send monthly community newsletters that inform and engage members.
  • Own the community communications calendar, keeping messaging timely, consistent, and on-brand across email, eHub, and other member channels.
  • Write and distribute announcements for community events, champion initiatives, campaigns , and key organizational updates.
  • Track newsletter and communication performance (open rates, click-through, engagement) and adjust content and cadence to improve reach and impact.
  • Keep a consistent community voice and brand across all written and digital touchpoints.

Metrics & Reporting

  • Help define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of community integration across the talent journey, including eHub and communications performance.
  • Regularly report on community engagement, member satisfaction, and program impact to stakeholders.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with city leads, members, and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and collaboration.
  • Act as the central point of contact for community-related initiatives and make sure information flows smoothly across the organization.

Enablement & Amplification

  • Curate and share member-generated content and success stories, through eHub, newsletters, and other channels, to engage the broader community.
  • Enable cities to drive local engagement, share learnings, and build communities of practice.

Skill Requirements-Must Have

  • 3-4 years of experience in community management, social/digital media, internal comms, or program management, ideally in education, tech, or a membership-based organization.
  • Hands-on experience running an online community platform (e.g. Discourse, Circle, Slack, Discord, or similar) at scale.
  • Proven ability to plan and write newsletters and other member communications that people actually read, with a consistent, on-brand voice.
  • Comfortable working with email/newsletter tools (e.g. Mailchimp, HubSpot, or similar) and basic engagement analytics.
  • Experience planning and running community events, whether virtual, in-person, or hybrid.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to adapt tone and message across channels and audiences.
  • Comfortable working with data: tracking engagement metrics, spotting trends, and turning insights into action.
  • Ability to work with city leads, members, and cross-functional teams across multiple locations, including virtually.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, target-driven environment with a hands-on approach.

Skill Requirements - Nice To Have

  • Experience moderating or building online communities from the ground up.
  • Familiarity with community-led growth, ambassador, or referral programs.
  • Experience with graphic or content tools (e.g. Canva) to support newsletters and social content.
  • Knowledge of behavioural psychology or engagement strategies to improve retention and participation.

Due to the considerable amount of virtual working and interaction with colleagues and customers in different physical locations internationally, it is essential that the successful applicant has the drive and ethic to succeed working in small teams physically but in larger efforts virtually. Self-drive to communicate constantly using web collaboration and video conferencing is essential. As an employee, you will be encouraged to continually develop your capability & attain certifications to reflect your growth as an individual.
