Amazon is an American technology and retail conglomerate founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 as an online bookstore and headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It operates the world's largest online marketplace together with a global logistics network, physical grocery stores and a third-party seller platform that accounts for most units sold. Amazon Web Services, launched in 2006, is the leading public cloud provider and generates the majority of the group's operating profit, while advertising, Prime Video, Alexa devices and Kuiper satellite broadband round out the business.

Join the world class safety culture at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and be part of supporting the largest cloud computing infrastructure team as a Regional Safety Manager. As the Regional Safety Manager, you will own the Health and Safety function of your respective area as well as supervise a team of Health and Safety Managers responsible for similar daily safety functions.

You will be responsible for improving the health and safety of our data centers, advancing safety culture, and protecting our employees. Each day you will work with our data center engineers, the people who make the cloud go. They are working with electrical switching equipment, large scale air handling mechanical systems, and critical IT gear.

You will work closely with experts in security, construction, operations, logistics, compliance, corporate counsel, and human resources to further the global health safety program. You will partner with employees as well as contractors to achieve health and safety goals and improve our already strong safety culture. You will work in a fast-paced environment where our operations are rapidly changing, advocating safe changes in the face of new infrastructure, new tools, and new products/processes.

This role is for a qualified and experienced people leader. The primary responsibilities of the role are to own the safety strategy for a multi-cluster portfolio of geographically localized data centers and to manage a team of Health and Safety Managers across those sites. You will set the vision and define the safety strategy for your regional portfolio, design the right team structure and mechanisms to meet long-term business goals, and achieve consensus on priorities with senior operations partners. The PDX portfolio is in a period of growth, expanding across established sites and builds, so you will anticipate future growth and investment needs and build a workforce strategy to match.

You will have managed a team of safety professionals and will be able to demonstrate how you improved the performance of an existing team along with displaying skills in creating or growing a team. You will manage succession planning, hiring, coaching, managing performance, and promoting. You will be knowledgeable in US occupational safety regulations, including OSHA recordkeeping requirements (29 CFR 1904), as well as industry best practices related to hazard recognition and mitigation in critical infrastructure environments.

You will be part of a regional and global team that works with internal and external partners to maintain and enhance the safety of operations. Close collaboration with onsite physical security, vendors, compliance officers, risk management, and fire/life safety systems is required. Additionally, you will work with employees and contractors to achieve specific safety objectives.

You must be an effective communicator, sending clear, concise, and consistent messages verbally, in written form, and in public speaking forums. You will write compelling strategic narratives, including QBR and operating plan inputs, and present them effectively to Directors and VPs. You will advise, instruct, and train company safety professionals, as well as operations personnel, on safety policies and procedures. You will also drive learnings from incidents to prevent recurrence across sites and raise the bar on investigation quality across your portfolio.

This role requires regular travel across a geographically distributed set of data center sites.

Key job responsibilities

- Own the safety strategy and lifecycle of complex cross-functional safety programs across a multi-cluster ADC portfolio

- Manage and develop a team of Health & Safety Managers across multiple sites and geographies.

- Implement and ensure compliance with health and safety standards, policies, and practices that meet or exceed regulatory requirements, including safety management systems, training, and risk assessments.

- Own regional MBR and QBR narratives; analyze safety metrics and trends across the portfolio, deep-dive performance gaps, and design strategic responses.

- Conduct cadenced reviews of investigation quality; ensure narratives meet IRB standards before closure and own escalation decisions for high-severity events.

- Partner with construction managers to ensure risks are identified and mitigated prior to live operations as new capacity comes online.

- Influence senior operations Directors and cross-functional partners across Facilities, Construction, Security, and Legal to drive controls adoption at scale.

- Anticipate future growth and investment needs across clusters and build workforce and succession strategy to match a rapidly scaling portfolio.

- Consult and partner with the AWS compliance and legal teams for regulatory interpretations and guidance.

- In order to be qualified for this position, you must be able to obtain and hold TS Clearance within 18 months of being in role.

- All other duties as assigned.
