Software Development Manager, Prime Benefits

We are looking for an experienced Software Development Manager to lead a team of software engineers building and scaling Amazon Family platform capabilities. You will own the technical direction and delivery for a significant portion of the Amazon Family charter, manage and grow a team of SDEs and QAEs, and partner closely with product, design, and partner teams across BPC.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives on developing engineers, driving technical excellence, and delivering customer-facing products at Amazon scale.

Key job responsibilities

People leadership: Manage, mentor, and grow a team of ~10-15 SDEs and QAEs. Own hiring, performance management, career development, and team health.

Technical delivery: Drive the design, development, and operation of scalable, reliable, secure platform services for Amazon Family. Ensure high standards for code quality, operational excellence, and system availability.

Roadmap ownership: Partner with product management to define and deliver the multi-quarter roadmap. Translate business goals into technical strategy and executable plans.

Cross-team collaboration: Work with partner teams across BPC and the wider Amazon ecosystem to integrate family-sharing capabilities into their products.

Operational excellence: Own the operational posture of your services - on-call, incident response, COE follow-through, and continuous improvement of monitoring and resilience.

Stakeholder management: Communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to senior leadership and stakeholders across geographies.

A day in the life

No two days are identical, but a typical day for this SDM might look like:

- Morning: Start with a review of your services' operational health - overnight alarms, on-call handoff notes, and key dashboards. Join the daily stand-up with your engineers to unblock work and align on priorities.

- Mid-morning: Dive into a design review for a new family-sharing capability, coaching a senior engineer through trade-offs on scalability and data privacy. Follow up with 1:1s, focusing on career growth and individual development.

- Midday: Sync with product and partner teams to align on roadmap sequencing and dependencies. Overlap hours with distributed stakeholders often fall in this window.

- Afternoon: Balance strategic work - refining the multi-quarter roadmap, reviewing a hiring pipeline, or drafting a technical narrative - with tactical support for your team. Jump into an incident review or COE deep-dive when needed.

- Ongoing: Throughout the day, you're removing blockers, making prioritization calls, mentoring engineers, and ensuring your team is building the right things the right way. You protect your team's focus while keeping delivery on track and stakeholders informed.

The Benefits, Pricing & Constructs team is central to Amazon Prime's north star vision of creating Earth's most engaging, satisfying, and loved membership program. We drive profitable growth through four key levers: increasing potential value through new benefits, making members aware and excited about Prime's value, innovating new Prime constructs to reach new segments, and growing Amazon's long-term free cash flow through strategic benefit partnerships and pricing decisions.

Basic qualifications

- 7+ years of engineering experience

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience

- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

- Experience partnering with product or program management teams

- Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems

Preferred qualifications

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
