American Express is a New York financial services company founded in 1850 as an express freight business that became a payments network and card issuer. Unlike the four-party networks it competes with, it issues most of its own cards and operates its own network, which lets it earn merchant discount revenue as well as interest and annual fees, and supports a premium rewards proposition built on travel and lounge access. Its business spans consumer and small business cards, corporate payments, merchant acquiring and travel services, and it is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The Enterprise Technology Services organization partners with every part of the American Express business to power the company’s growth and innovation with trust and efficiency, and drive competitive differentiation with speed. We support the delivery and operations of technology, digital, and data capabilities, platforms, and services globally. Specifically, our team is responsible for the company’s technology engineering, architecture, and infrastructure, providing 24x7 support to ensure an uninterrupted, high-quality experience for customers and colleagues. We also provide product management for core enterprise platforms, and lead technology risk and information security, enterprise data governance and platforms, digital product and design, and enterprise AI platforms on behalf of the company.

We are seeking a Director of Digital Product Management to define and drive the end-to-end vision and strategy for our Enterprise Observability platform (Logging, Metrics, Tracing, Events - MELT).

This leader will own the evolution of observability capabilities across a portfolio of tools and platforms, ensuring a cohesive, scalable, and future-ready ecosystem that supports thousands of engineers and SREs.

Operating at the intersection of product strategy, platform architecture, and emerging innovation, you will shape how observability evolves across the enterprise-including advancements in AI-driven observability, AIOps integration, and intelligent automation.

This is a platform strategy leadership role, not a feature-product role. Success requires systems thinking, strong product judgment, and the ability to align multiple stakeholders around a unified vision.

  • End-to-end product vision for observability, connecting logging, metrics, tracing, and events into a unified platform experience
  • Portfolio strategy across observability tools and platforms, including rationalization, vendor strategy, and long-term roadmap decisions
  • Identification and incubation of next-generation capabilities, including AI/ML-driven observability and automation
  • Product strategy and roadmap, aligned to enterprise needs, scalability, and cost efficiency
  • Deep understanding of customer needs (developers, SREs, platform teams) to inform product direction
  • Partnership with Engineering, SRE, and App Support teams to ensure successful delivery and operationalization
  • Lead and develop a team of Product Managers, setting a high bar for product thinking, execution, and impact
  • Define a cohesive vision across MELT capabilities, ensuring a consistent and scalable observability ecosystem
  • Drive portfolio-level decisions including build vs. buy, open source vs. vendor strategy, and platform consolidation
  • Partner with Engineering to deliver highly scalable, reliable distributed observability platforms
  • Shape and advance emerging capabilities such as AI observability, intelligent alerting, and signal correlation
  • Ensure observability platforms integrate effectively with AIOps, incident management, and cloud ecosystems
  • Establish and track product success metrics tied to platform value, efficiency, and long-term sustainability
  • Communicate product strategy, tradeoffs, and outcomes effectively to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in Product Management, with strong experience in platform, infrastructure, or developer products
  • 3+ years of experience leading and developing Product Managers
  • Experience defining product strategy across multiple tools or platforms, not just a single product
  • Strong understanding of observability systems and telemetry (logs, metrics, traces, events)
  • Experience working with distributed systems, microservices, and cloud-native architectures
  • Proven ability to influence and align stakeholders across complex, federated organizations
  • Excellent communication and strategic thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with implementing OpenTelemetry and modern observability ecosystems (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, cloud-native tooling)
  • Experience with platform portfolio rationalization or vendor strategy
  • Exposure to AIOps, AI/ML in observability, or intelligent automation
  • Experience in large-scale enterprise or regulated environments

Leadership Traits for Success

  • Thinks in terms of systems and platforms, not features
  • Strong product judgment with the ability to make complex tradeoffs
  • Balances long-term vision with pragmatic execution
  • Drives alignment across teams through influence and clarity of vision
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and complexity
  • Passionate about improving developer and platform experience at scale

Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.
