Transportation Licensing Engineer

About the role

Apollo Generators is hiring a Transportation Licensing Engineer to own the licensing and regulatory compliance of how our radioactive materials and sealed sources are packaged and shipped. This is a mid- to senior-level role reporting to the Nuclear Licensing Lead.

You will be the company's technical authority on radioactive material transport. You will select and certify packaging, coordinate packaging design efforts, prepare package applications and safety analyses, and work directly with the NRC, DOT, and other competent authorities to get shipments approved and keep them compliant. You will work closely with engineering, operations, and outside vendors as our products move from design and testing into production.

Key responsibilities

  • Determine the right packaging and approval pathway (Excepted, Type A, Type B, special form) for each shipment under 10 CFR 71, 49 CFR, and IAEA SSR-6.

  • Prepare and maintain package licensing documents, including Safety Analysis Reports for Packaging (SARPs), Certificate of Compliance amendments, and special form source certifications.

  • Lead or coordinate the technical analyses that support package approvals: structural, thermal, containment, shielding, and criticality safety, performed in-house or by subcontractors.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the NRC, DOT/PHMSA, and foreign competent authorities on transport matters, including requests for additional information and inspections.

  • Develop and maintain transport procedures covering package preparation, loading, leak testing, radiation and contamination surveys, labeling, and shipping papers.

  • Evaluate design changes, maintenance, and repairs against package certificates and safety analysis commitments.

  • Support the procurement, fabrication, and acceptance testing of packaging, including vendor qualification and commercial grade dedication of safety-related items.

  • Support the transport-related elements of the quality assurance program under 10 CFR 71 Subpart H and NQA-1, including audits and corrective actions.

  • Train internal staff and shipping personnel on transport requirements and procedures.

  • Track regulatory changes affecting radioactive material transport and assess their impact on Apollo's operations.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, nuclear, or a related engineering discipline.

  • 7+ years of engineering experience in the nuclear industry, with at least 4 years focused on radioactive material packaging and transportation.

  • Working knowledge of 10 CFR 71, 49 CFR 171-178, and IAEA transport regulations.

  • Hands-on experience preparing or maintaining package applications, SARPs, or Certificates of Compliance for NRC- or DOT-approved packages.

  • Direct experience interacting with the NRC, DOT, or DOE on licensing submittals and responses.

  • Familiarity with nuclear quality assurance requirements (NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21).

  • Clear technical writing and the ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical procedures for operations staff.

  • Eligibility to work in the United States.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in mechanical or nuclear engineering.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Experience with sealed sources and special form certification.

  • Experience with international packaging and transport requirements / competent authority approvals.

  • Proficiency with shielding and criticality codes such as SCALE or MCNP, or experience directing subcontractors who use them.

  • Structural analysis experience under the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Sections III and VIII).

  • ASME NQA-1 Lead Auditor certification.

  • ASNT NDT Level III or Level II in Leak Testing, or experience with ANSI N14.5 leak testing programs.

  • Experience in a startup or fast-growing company, or on first-of-a-kind licensing efforts.

Location, compensation, and benefits

  • Location: Cambridge, MA (750 Main Street), with hybrid or remote work within the United States possible in coordination with the hiring manager. Occasional travel to regulators, vendors, and test or shipping sites.

  • Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage, HSA for eligible plans, 401(k), company holidays, and flexible paid time off.
