Job Title: UX/UI Designer
Job Location: Hybrid preferred, with at least one day per week onsite at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. Fully remote performance is acceptable for highly qualified personnel.
Job Description:
The Digital Innovation & Integration Service Capability (DIISC), a team within the Aerospace Capabilities Portfolio Office (ACPO), builds the software that NASA’s aeronautics community uses to explore test data, forecasts, financials, and operational data. These are data-heavy analytics applications, built by a technical, cloud-forward team that deploys a large number of them. This role exists to make the applications and their data usable: designing the interfaces (dashboards, data tables, charts, data catalogs, and data-exploration workflows) through which people work with them. This is the founding UX/UI design role on the team: the person who stands up the design practice from the ground up. There is no design system, information architecture, persona set, or research foundation in place today, so this designer creates them, and owns how people interact with the applications end to end, from research and personas through a reusable design system and production-ready designs.
This is a hands-on design role on a small, technical team. It is a design and interface role, not a data analysis, data science, or modeling role. The team already has data scientists and engineers; this person provides the information architecture and design system their work is built on.
Responsibilities:
- Design system: create the team’s design system from scratch (components, patterns, standards, and documentation), and grow and maintain it as the source of truth for the team’s UI, including the visualization standards data scientists follow when presenting data.
- Research and personas: define the team’s user personas from the ground up; plan and run user research, and turn findings into design decisions the team can act on.
- Data-heavy UI design: produce high-fidelity prototypes and production-ready designs for analytics applications such as dashboards, data tables, charts, and complex data-exploration workflows.
- Information architecture: define how information is organized, labeled, and navigated across the applications, and work hand in hand with data scientists so the data they present fits that structure.
- Data discovery: lead the research, requirements gathering, and design for data discovery tools such as a data catalog.
- Data-informed design: use data, including usage analytics, user research findings, and usability testing results, to drive design decisions; after deployment, measure how designs perform and iterate based on the results.
- UX deliverables: produce user flows, wireframes, and other UX artifacts; present and defend design decisions to the team and stakeholders.
- Standards and practice: establish the team’s design process, standards, and tooling, and set the bar for design quality across the applications.
- Modern design practice: apply current AI tools and AI-assisted workflows across the design process, from research synthesis to prototyping and handoff.
- Collaboration: work closely with engineers, data scientists, analysts, and program staff to turn requirements into usable software.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in design, human-computer interaction, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 8 years of experience with 5+ years of professional UX/UI design experience.
- Demonstrated experience where the primary body of work is designing data-heavy, analytics-focused products such as dashboards, data tables, charts, data visualization, and data-exploration workflows, with demonstrated strength in information architecture for complex or technical data. A portfolio centered on marketing sites, content pages, or general web design does not meet this requirement.
- Proficiency in Figma.
- Current, hands-on experience using AI tools in the UX/UI design process.
- Demonstrated experience creating a design system from the ground up, not just working within an existing one.
- Demonstrated experience defining personas and running user research to drive design.
- Demonstrated experience using data to drive design decisions.
- Experience working directly with developers to carry designs through implementation and deployment, and with stakeholders to gather requirements and present design decisions.
- Experience working on technical teams that build and deploy applications.
Desired:
- Experience designing a data catalog, data discovery tool, or similar metadata and search-driven product, including gathering its requirements.
- Experience measuring design performance after deployment and iterating based on the results.
- Experience on cloud-forward teams that deploy applications frequently.
- Experience designing for technical or scientific users, such as engineers, researchers, or analysts.
- Comfort working with real data: understanding how datasets are structured, how they relate, and what their metadata describes, and designing around that.
