Arm Holdings is a British semiconductor and software design company headquartered in Cambridge, England. Rather than manufacturing physical chips directly, Arm designs energy-efficient central processing unit (CPU) architectures and intellectual property (IP), licensing them to major technology partners such as Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Nvidia.

Do you want to shape the future of Arm technology to enable the next revolution in computing? We have a great opportunity in the CPU technology team for a highly motivated individual with a passion for CPU microarchitecture, performance analysis, and developing innovative tools to improve how we characterize Arm-based systems!

Arm’s Sophia Antipolis design centre is located in one of the most appealing parts of France, at the heart of Europe’s largest and most dynamic technology park. Surrounded by mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, this outstanding design center has delivered leading products from Arm’s Cortex (TM) processor family. These CPUs power a wide range of systems, from mobile and client devices to infrastructure platforms, using technology that has taken user experience and performance to another level!

Job Overview:

We have two internship opportunities to propose:

  • Device Analysis: explore and develop tooling and methodologies for CPU performance analysis on real devices, helping make characterization more efficient, automated, and reusable across different Arm platforms and microarchitectures. The internship covers areas such as performance monitoring unit (PMU) tooling and knowledge management, automated performance studies across devices, data collection and analysis workflows and challenges related to understanding CPU microarchitecture behaviour from real workloads.
  • CPU Microarchitecture: investigate what system-level information could be useful to the CPU, how it could be communicated, and how much value it provides beyond information the CPU can already observe. The work will explore the appropriate granularity and timescale of this information and evaluate selected use cases through modelling, simulation and performance analysis. Potential applications include adapting to memory latency and bandwidth conditions, cache and memory policies, resource management and hardware prefetching.

What you could be doing as a CPU Technology Intern:

  • Work in a team of experienced CPU and performance architects
  • Explore ways to make architectural and PMU knowledge easier to capture, reuse, and apply across different CPU microarchitectures (Device Analysis)
  • Improve automation of performance experiments, data collection, processing, and analysis across selected devices and workloads (Device Analysis)
  • Focus on discovering useful system-to-CPU information rather than optimising a single hardware feature (CPU microarchitecture)
  • Use developed tooling to investigate real CPU performance behaviour and contribute insights into microarchitecture and workload characteristics (CPU microarchitecture)

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are currently enrolled and studying towards Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related field. Candidates with alternative degrees will also be considered if they have relevant experience.
  • Possess a solid background in low level programming languages (C++, C or Python) and Linux development environments.
  • Have a good understanding of computer architecture fundamentals , an interest in CPU performance analysis and understanding how different parts of a computing system interact. Most importantly, we value curiosity, a willingness to learn,

Qualities that will help your application stand out:

  • Understanding of CPU microarchitecture and hardware performance monitoring
  • Experience with performance analysis tools and methodologies on Linux
  • Experience with scripting, automation, or data analysis

Additional Information:

We encourage early applications as we review them on a first come/first served basis.

Arm Internships require you to be enrolled in a higher education degree.

The internship duration is 6 months, starting in 2027.

French Law requires students to complete an internship agreement (Convention de Stage). This is a tripartite agreement signed by the student, their home university and host organization, that facilitates an internship in France. It is the contract defining all the essential points of the internship: duration, missions, remuneration and benefits, insurance in the event of an accident, etc.

It is preferable that Arm's own template of the agreement is used. Successful applicants will be required to provide contact details of the appropriate university representatives in order to have the agreement signed.

Please note we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role. Applicants must have the right to work in the country where the internship is based, without relying on sponsorship by Arm, for the full duration of the internship

In Return:

Working on interesting new projects with leaders in the field is exciting, but we also know how important it is to receive support. That's why throughout your internship, you can expect regular feedback and development opportunities, social activities to connect with your peers, an end of internship celebration, plus the opportunity to be *considered for future Graduate positions (*subject to performance). #getreadytogrow

In addition to a competitive salary of €24,000 to €27,000 per annum (dependent on Bachelors or Masters), our on-the-job learning and mentoring/buddy schemes provide unparalleled learning and networking opportunities from the best in the industry.
