Auror empowers the retail community to prevent crime, reduce loss, and make stores safer. Every retailer deserves the chance to protect their profits, people, and property from crime. Inspired by this challenge, Tom, Phil, and James founded Auror to empower retailers with the intelligence and tools to stop crime, for good.

At Auror, we’re empowering the retail industry to tackle theft and Organised Retail Crime, a $150 Billion problem globally. It’s high volume crime that’s increasingly organised in nature and is putting people, retailers, and communities at risk every day.

Founded in New Zealand 13 years ago, we’re working with some of the best and largest retailers in the world across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Auror is connecting people and intelligence to reduce crime. We’re using technology for good.

In partnership with our leading retail partners, we need people with the passion, determination, and innovation required to overcome one of the world's largest problems. If you’re looking to make a difference with and for the people dedicated to stopping crime, for good, then we want you on our team.

We're also embracing the potential of AI to supercharge our impact-whether that's enhancing the way we detect trends, support our customers, or improve internal workflows. As a company, we're committed to responsibly incorporating AI into how we work and what we build, and we encourage all Aurors to be curious about how AI can elevate their work, regardless of role or function.

The Role

As an Intermediate Software Engineer, in Risk Detection, you’ll work on one of Auror’s most strategically important product areas, helping build the experiences that enable retailers to understand and respond to crime in real time.

You’ll contribute to capabilities across Auror Subject Recognition (ASR) and our broader Risk Detection platform, working on products where information needs to move from cameras and detection systems through to clear, actionable experiences for customers.

This is a frontend-leaning role, but not a frontend-only role. You’ll spend much of your time working with React and TypeScript, building thoughtful, high-quality customer experiences. You’ll also have opportunities to work across APIs, services, data flows, and our C#/.NET backend as you develop your full-stack engineering skills.

You’ll work closely with other engineers, Product, Design, and QE to understand customer problems, contribute to technical solutions, and ship software that is reliable, intuitive, and maintainable.

You won’t be expected to have all the answers. You’ll be part of an experienced engineering team where you can take increasing ownership, learn from others, and develop your technical judgement while making a meaningful contribution to Auror’s mission.

Success in this role means consistently delivering high-quality product improvements, taking ownership of increasingly complex engineering problems, contributing positively to the way the team builds software, and continuing to grow your technical capability.

Location

  • This role is based in Auckland. Candidates must either currently reside in Auckland or be willing to relocate.

About Auror Engineering

Collaboration is at the heart of the Engineering team at Auror. We believe that we can only build the very best software by working with each other and seeking different perspectives to solve problems. We’re a team that:

  • Ship code to production constantly: Our product team ships code to production on average at least 10-15 times a day prioritising small releases and short feedback cycles and we do this with a minimal defect rate.

  • Work on cloud native architecture: We focus on delivering business value to customers, without the burden of maintaining complex infrastructure

  • Work on innovative and up to date tech stacks: We are constantly evolving our technology stack inline with the needs of our business, leveraging React and Typescript for front-end and C# / Dotnet for back end. We host our services in Azure and utilise a wide range of cloud-native services with an evolving service-oriented architecture.

  • Contribute to our product: We work with Product Management and Product Design from the very beginning to make sure we’re delivering value to our customers and making a meaningful impact.

  • Supports a coaching culture: Together, we support one another to level up

  • Continuously improve: We are relentless about getting better and improving our processes, tooling and tech stack.

What you’ll do

Build Great Product Experiences

  • Build and improve customer-facing experiences across Auror’s Risk Detection capabilities, including ASR.

  • Use React and TypeScript to create intuitive, accessible, and responsive product experiences.

  • Work closely with Product and Design to understand the customer problem behind the work you’re delivering.

  • Consider usability, accessibility, performance, and reliability as part of building a quality product.

  • Participate in discovery and technical discussions, contributing ideas and identifying implementation considerations early.

Own and Deliver Engineering Work

  • Take ownership of well-defined product and technical problems from development through to production.

  • Break work into manageable increments and deliver changes safely and consistently.

  • Write maintainable, well-tested code and contribute to the ongoing health of the systems you work in.

  • Investigate bugs and production issues, identify root causes, and contribute to improvements that prevent similar problems recurring.

  • Develop confidence working with ambiguity and ask for context or support when needed.

Develop Your Full-Stack Capability

  • Build a strong understanding of how our frontend applications interact with APIs, services, and data.

  • Contribute to C#/.NET backend services where required to deliver an end-to-end customer outcome.

  • Learn how Risk Detection works across the wider system, from POI enrolment and detection processing through to the experiences customers use.

  • Work with engineers across frontend, backend, edge, and platform systems to understand how changes fit into the broader architecture.

Contribute to Engineering Quality

  • Participate actively in code reviews, technical discussions, pairing, and team engineering practices.

  • Apply established engineering patterns while contributing ideas about how they could be improved.

  • Write appropriate automated tests and help maintain confidence in the software the team ships.

  • Consider observability, performance, security, privacy, and maintainability as part of your implementation decisions.

  • Share what you learn and help create a collaborative environment where engineers can learn from each other.

Use AI to Improve How You Work

  • Use AI and LLM-based engineering tools thoughtfully to support development, testing, debugging, and learning.

  • Explore ways AI can help you understand unfamiliar systems, iterate faster, and improve the quality of your work.

  • Apply appropriate judgement and human oversight when using AI-generated solutions.

  • Share useful approaches and learnings with the team.

Build Reliable, Responsible Software

  • Help build software where latency, correctness, and reliability directly affect customer trust.

  • Contribute to monitoring, observability, and operational readiness for the systems you work on.

  • Participate in incident response and learn from production issues.

  • Follow privacy-conscious engineering practices, particularly when working with biometric or other sensitive information.

About you

  • A desire to do frontend engineering: You’re excited about building modern web applications and keen to work with React and TypeScript or similar technologies.

  • Strong engineering fundamentals: You write understandable, maintainable code and have a good grounding in software design, testing, debugging, and development practices.

  • Product mindset: You’re interested in why something is being built, not just what needs to be implemented, and care about the experience customers have with the software you create.

  • Growing full-stack capability: You’re comfortable working with APIs and backend concepts and are interested in developing further across the stack. Experience with C#, .NET, or similar backend technologies is useful but not essential.

  • Ownership: You can independently deliver well-scoped pieces of work and know when to ask for help, clarification, or another perspective.

  • Quality mindset: You care about usability, accessibility, performance, reliability, security, and maintainability rather than considering work complete when the code simply functions.

  • Collaboration: You work well with engineers and cross-functional partners, contribute constructively to discussions, and are open to feedback and different perspectives.

  • Communication: You can explain your thinking, ask good questions, and communicate technical concepts clearly with your teammates.

  • Curiosity: You enjoy learning how systems work and want to continue developing your technical and product judgement.

  • Interest in AI-assisted engineering: You’re curious about how AI and LLM tooling can improve how you build and understand software.

  • We are looking for people who demonstrate a strong alignment to our Guiding Principles (you can find these on our

    Careers page).

What are the benefits like?

  • Competitive salary range: Depending on level of experience a starting salary of $100,000 - 120,000 (IC2).

  • Annual bonus: Eligibility for a NZD$2,200 (IC2) bonus at the end of the financial year if we’ve hit our revenue goals together.

  • Employee share scheme: You’ll own part of a company making a real difference!

  • Flexibility: We are hard-working and outcome focused, but recognise there is more to life than work. We promote a healthy work/life blend.

  • Shorter work weeks (at full pay): Everyone gets Friday afternoons off, so you can start your weekend early, and do more of whatever it is that makes you happy.

  • Focus on mental and physical health: We understand how vital our health is and have policies to support your wellness, including Wellness Days, and up to $750 NZD for expert sessions every year.

  • Health Care Plan: We prioritise looking after your health by offering cover under our premier health business insurance plan through nib health insurance - with Auror covering 100% of your premium.

  • Family-friendly: We offer comprehensive paid parental leave - 12 weeks for birth parents and 6 weeks for non-birth parents following birth, adoption, or surrogacy, available to all Aurors from day one.

  • Personal growth: We support our team to participate in courses, conferences, or events that will help them develop their skills.

  • Team love: We have regular team lunches and social events where most (if not all) activities are during work hours.
