As an Intern with the Baker Tilly Public Sector team, you will gain hands-on experience supporting public-sector clients, such as state and local governments, public utilities, school districts, authorities, and other public-sector organizations, as they plan for and finance capital and infrastructure needs. You will work alongside experienced Municipal Advisors and public finance professionals on debt issuance and municipal advisory engagements, learning how financial strategy, budgeting, credit considerations, market conditions and long-term affordability come together to support community priorities. You will contribute to real client work while developing the technical, analytical and client service skills that can provide a strong foundation for a career in public finance.

You will enjoy this role if you:

  • Are considering a long-term career in public finance, municipal finance consulting or advisory work serving state and local governments and other public entities.
  • Are interested in how public entities finance capital projects and essential infrastructure that affect communities.
  • Want to grow professionally and develop your client service, analytical and technical finance skills through hands-on experience and feedback.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Support debt issuance engagements from early-stage planning through transaction execution and learn how municipal financings are structured, sold and repaid.
  • Assist with evaluating financing alternatives, debt structures, repayment sources, timing considerations and the affordability of proposed capital plans.
  • Assist with preparing and maintaining financial analyses, debt models, schedules, presentations and other client-ready materials used to support financing decisions.
  • Analyze financial information such as existing debt, future borrowing needs, revenue and expenditure trends, fund balances and tax- or rate-supported revenues.
  • Assist with transaction documentation, financing calendars, data requests, due diligence materials and other activities that help keep debt issuance projects organized and moving forward
  • Participate, as appropriate, in client meetings and financing working-group discussions with issuers and other transaction professionals.
  • Build a working knowledge of the public finance industry, including common financing structures, market terminology, transaction participants and the lifecycle of a municipal financing.
  • Participate in intern orientation, training and on-the-job learning through real engagements and direct coaching from experienced public finance professionals.
  • Build strong work relationships while demonstrating responsiveness, attention to detail, curiosity and a commitment to high-quality client service.

Successful candidates will be:

  • Currently enrolled or pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, business, public administration, public policy, mathematics or another related field from an accredited institution.
    • Enrollment in a master’s degree program such as an MPA, MPP, MBA, or similar degree is a plus.
  • Interested in public finance, municipal debt, infrastructure, government finance or client service for public-sector organizations.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer-sponsored visa sponsorship, now or in the future.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.

Successful candidates will have:
