Job Summary

A Water Treatment Technician III operates filters, chlorinators, dry chemical feeders and other mechanical and electrical equipment in a water treatment plant or remote stations and gives work direction to lower-level technicians. Work of this class involves leading lower level technicians but does not involve full supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a rotating shift with evening, night, weekend, holiday and callback hours as required and may include being on-call or held over until properly relieved or for emergencies. Work is performed in a water treatment plant where there is exposure to chemical dust and fumes and liquid chemical leaks. Work requires moderate physical exertion walking distances between sites at the filtration plants and transferring equipment in and out of boats and may require strenuous physical exertion in the maneuvering of 150-pound chlorine cylinder tanks; work may also require the wearing of breathing apparatus when handling hazardous chemicals.

Minimum Qualifications:

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

Education: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.

AND

Experience: Have four years of experience in the operation of water filters and mechanical and electrical equipment in a water treatment plant or monitoring and switching chlorine cylinders.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

NOTE: YOU MUST UPLOAD A COPY OF YOUR VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE WITH APPLICATION AT TIME OF APPLYING.

Employees in this class must hold and maintain a valid Permanent State of Maryland Water Treatment Class 4 Operator’s Certificate, issued by the Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators, throughout employment.

Employees are required to have a Maryland Department of the Environment Water Sampler Certification prior to employment and must maintain and renew this certification every three years as a condition of continued employment.

The Following is required for Positions in this Class Assigned to Chlorine Unit:

Employees must obtain within two months of hire a Maryland Basic Boating Certificate from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Employees must obtain within three months of hire, maintain and renew annually a Baltimore City Fire Department Hazardous Materials and Emergency Response Certification.

Prior to appointment and annually thereafter, employees must pass pulmonary function test.

Employees must be able to wear respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus and participate in chlorine emergency situations.

  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to perform simple laboratory tests.
  • Ability to train others.

Additional Information

Background Check

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.

Probation

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.

Eligibility

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

Education Accreditation

Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.

Selection Process

The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. Examination Process
