Barclays is a British universal bank whose roots go back to a goldsmith banking partnership founded in London in 1690, and which took its modern joint-stock form in 1896 through the amalgamation of twenty family banks. It combines a large United Kingdom retail and business bank with an investment bank that competes with the American bulge bracket in fixed income and equities trading, an unusual pairing for a European institution.
