Job Description

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

  • To advise and influence decision making, contribute to policy development and take responsibility for operational effectiveness. Collaborate closely with other functions/ business divisions.

  • Consult on complex issues; providing advice to People Leaders to support the resolution of escalated issues.
  • Identify ways to mitigate risk and developing new policies/procedures in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work done.
  • Perform work that is closely related to that of other areas, which requires understanding of how areas coordinate and contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the organisation sub-function.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategy.
  • Engage in complex analysis of data from multiple sources of information, internal and external sources such as procedures and practises (in other areas, teams, companies, etc).to solve problems creatively and effectively.

We're seeking a Software Engineer to join GitLab's Platform Team, a strategic powerhouse driving the technical foundation that empowers our entire engineering community. This is an opportunity to architect solutions that directly impact over 20,000 software engineers across the company, shaping how they build, deploy, and scale enterprise technology platforms.

In this role, you'll work on critical infrastructure, developer tooling, and platform services that enable our engineering teams to move faster, build better, and innovate at scale. You'll contribute to systems and tools that directly impact how software is developed, tested, and deployed across the organisation. The team is positioned to evaluate, build, and support advanced deployment tooling extensions to our established GitLab enterprise toolchain platform, enabling teams to deploy software more efficiently and safely while implementing bank-wide controls.

To be successful as a Software Engineer, you should have the following essential skills:

  • Software Engineering & Programming Experience: Advanced software engineering skills with proficiency in at least one widely adopted programming language such as Java, Golang, or a similar modern language. Experience designing, building, and supporting production-grade applications and services.
  • Cloud Engineering: Advanced knowledge of AWS and public cloud technologies, with experience designing, deploying, and supporting cloud-native solutions, infrastructure, and services at scale.
  • Platform & Infrastructure Engineering: Experience building and supporting engineering platforms, developer tooling, and automation capabilities that improve software delivery, operational efficiency, and developer experience.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Scalable & Highly Available Systems: Experience designing and supporting resilient, highly available systems that can scale to meet the demands of large engineering organisations and critical business services.
  • CI/CD & Automation: Proficiency in CI/CD pipeline design, implementation, optimisation, and deployment automation, with a good understanding of modern software delivery practices.
  • Scripting & Operational Tooling: Experience with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or Ruby to develop automation solutions, operational tooling, and platform integrations.
