Build and ship AI agents and automation that the whole corporation uses every day. The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is currently seeking a Digital Workplace AI and Automation Engineer co-op student/intern for the Winter & Summer 2027 work terms (January to August) to help design, build, and operate the AI assistants, agents, and process automation behind BCI’s Microsoft 365 and collaboration platforms.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
BCI manages a globally diversified portfolio of assets valued at $313.7 billion and is one of Canada’s largest institutional investors. We invest globally to support pension and other funds for more than 30 clients based in British Columbia. We are proud to have been chosen as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers and BC’s Top Employers. These national and provincial competitions recognize employers who offer exceptional workplaces for their employees.
The AI and Automation Engineer co-op/intern will work within our Digital Workplace team in the Technology department. This is a great opportunity for you to work hands-on with production AI platforms, including Microsoft Foundry, Anthropic Claude, and Microsoft Copilot and to write the automation that keeps BCI’s collaboration environment running. You will finish the term with agents you designed and deployed, automation running in production, and a working understanding of how a regulated financial institution evaluates, secures, and rolls out AI.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
Digital Workplace owns how BCI works together: Microsoft 365, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams Rooms, and the AI capabilities layered on top of them. We run these platforms for the entire corporation and we build the agents, integrations, and automation that make them faster and safer to use. The team is small, technical, and delivery-focused, and works closely with Cyber Security, Cloud Operations, Enterprise Architecture, and the business areas we support.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Build, test, and deploy AI agents on platforms such as Microsoft Foundry, and Azure Bot Service, including prompt design, knowledge sources, guardrails, evaluation, and observability
Develop automation in PowerShell and Python against Microsoft Graph, SharePoint, Teams, Exchange, and ServiceNow REST APIs to replace manual operational work
Deploy and maintain that automation in Azure Automation runbooks and Azure DevOps pipelines, using source control, pull requests, and infrastructure as code
Run proof of concepts on new AI and automation capabilities, document what you find, and give the team a clear recommendation on whether BCI should adopt them
Build reporting and dashboards on platform usage, adoption, and platform health so the team can make decisions from data instead of anecdotes
Work with Cyber Security, Cloud Operations, and Enterprise Architecture on the identity, permission, and data protection reviews that every new AI integration goes through
Write the documentation, runbooks, and knowledge base articles that let other people operate what you build
Take part in the team’s agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and demos, and present your own work
REQUIRED SKILLS
Working toward a degree, diploma, or certificate in computer science, software engineering, data science, or a related technical program
Scripting and programming ability in Python and PowerShell, including comfort reading and extending code you did not write
A practical understanding of REST APIs, JSON, and authentication concepts such as OAuth 2.0, and the ability to read API documentation and make it work
Experience with Git version control and a willingness to work in a code review and pull request workflow
Hands-on curiosity about large language models and AI agents, including prompt engineering, and an interest in where they work well and where they fail
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, including explaining technical work to a non-technical audience
A security and privacy mindset, and sound judgement about handling corporate data
Comfort with problems that are not fully specified, and the initiative to ask questions and drive them to a conclusion
Familiarity with Microsoft 365, Microsoft Graph, Azure, Power Platform, Copilot Studio, or agent frameworks such as MCP would be an asset
Exposure to infrastructure as code (Terraform or Bicep) or CI/CD pipelines would be an asset
WHAT WE OFFER
Excellent career development and training by helping you understand the platforms, APIs, and engineering practices a large institutional investor uses to run and secure its digital workplace
Work with a dynamic team in a fast-paced environment
The development of real-world skills at one of the largest institutional investors in Canada
Exposure to some of the most talented, approachable, and inspiring people in the industry
The ability to opt-in for access to Dialogue, a user-friendly app that offers virtual primary care, employee and family services, and mental health supports
