Senior Backend Engineer - Payment Squad

Your Mission

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Payment Squad. They manage BlaBlaCar’s payment solutions that provide reliability, trust, and a smooth end-to-end experience.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, your role will be to drive the delivery of a reliable and scalable platform that supports the full payment lifecycle, fraud fight, and compliance requirements. You will take ownership of complex, cross-functional projects-such as finalizing the implementation of our payment orchestrator-and play a key role in expanding BlaBlaCar's business by proposing and integrating tailored payment methods for our various operational countries.

You will act as a technical reference, demonstrating strong autonomy, deep architectural thinking, and the ability to synchronize with multiple external teams (Legal, Cash Management & Finance, Payment Ops).

You will be reporting to the squad's Engineering Manager and working closely with a team of Software Engineers and a Product Manager.

Your responsibilities

• Drive and deliver transverse and complex technical projects from design to deployment, demonstrating a deep understanding of technical constraints and implementation challenges.
• Lead the finalization and scaling of the payment orchestrator and integrate new, adapted payment methods across different countries.
• Take a step back to proactively propose platform improvements, task automation, and better observability (e.g., establishing SLO reviews with SREs and owning your monitoring and alerting stack).
• Interact closely with various teams (Legal, Finance, Fraud/Payment Ops) to synchronize efforts, gather requirements, and assess cross-team impacts.
• Act as a mentor and guide for mid-level (IC3) developers within the squad, elevating the team's overall engineering standards.
• Participate in a cyclic on-call duty (approximately 1 week every 7 weeks) to ensure the high availability of our critical payment systems.

Your qualifications

• You have 5 to 10 years of overall engineering experience.
• You possess deep technical autonomy and a high level of critical thinking regarding software architecture and constraints.
• You are fluent in Java and have advanced knowledge of frameworks such as Spring, or SpringBoot.
• You have hands-on experience with service-oriented architectures, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and monitoring solutions (Datadog).
• You have excellent, clear, and concise communication skills, allowing you to easily step into any workshop and share technical expertise with both technical and business stakeholders.
• You are not reluctant to participate in on-call duties (mandatory for this role).
• Full working proficiency in English
