Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions though our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."

We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. No two days are the same.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced Engineering Manager (Transact) to help shape engineering excellence across BNZ Technology and provide specialist engineering leadership to the CLR Programme and Transaction and Investments domain.

This is a 24-month fixed term role.

What are some of the day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?

  • Define and embed engineering standards that drive quality, efficiency and consistency across BNZ Technology.
  • Lead and develop the CLR Programme Transact capability as it scales across Business Term Lending, Home Lending, Coexistence, Migration and Upgrade, alongside Asset Finance.
  • Work across Consumer Product & Services, platform and delivery teams to align engineering practices with our business and technology objectives.
  • Use engineering metrics and data to identify opportunities for improvement and drive better outcomes.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, supporting continuous learning, collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Drive improvements across the scalability, reliability and maintainability of our systems and solutions.
  • Identify engineering risks and help implement solutions that support system stability and compliance.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

This is an opportunity to influence engineering beyond a single team or platform, and you’ll help shape how engineering practices are developed and adopted across BNZ Technology.

You’ll have the opportunity to influence engineering standards, introduce better ways of working and help us balance consistency and simplification with innovation. If you enjoy solving complex engineering challenges and influencing technical outcomes at scale, this role gives you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across BNZ.

What is the team culture and environment like?

You’ll work in an environment that values collaboration, continuous learning and knowledge sharing. The role works closely across engineering, product, platform and programme teams, so building strong relationships and bringing people together will be key.

There’s a strong focus on creating an engineering community where expertise is shared, constructive challenge is encouraged, and we continually look for better and simpler ways to work.

What technical skills are required for this role?

We’re looking for someone with strong technical expertise and experience setting engineering standards, driving improvements and delivering high-quality engineering outcomes. Transact technical knowledge is a must

You’ll be confident working across complex technology environments, using data and engineering metrics to understand performance and identify opportunities for improvement. You’ll also bring a strong understanding of engineering best practices and emerging technologies, with the ability to apply these across different technology environments.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?

You’ll be a strong technical leader who can build trusted relationships and influence outcomes without direct authority. You’ll be comfortable navigating a complex environment, bringing people together around common engineering practices while balancing consistency with the flexibility to innovate.

You’ll be passionate about developing others and strengthening engineering capability through mentoring, knowledge sharing and collaboration. Strong stakeholder engagement, clear communication and a data-driven approach to decision making will also be important for success.
