Overview

Every merchant Breeze takes on creates an opportunity to grow and real financial exposure to manage. We’re hiring a Financial Underwriting Lead to own the decisions behind that growth: which merchants we support, on what terms, and how we protect Breeze from chargebacks, refunds, fraud, and merchant failure.

You’ll own underwriting from application through ongoing monitoring, combining corporate credit analysis with sharp financial judgment to make high-impact decisions. This is a hands-on builder role with the autonomy to create the policies, scorecards, and processes that will shape how Breeze manages risk and scales globally.

What You'll Do

• Underwrite new merchant applications: analyze financials, funding, runway/burn/unit economics; assess the business model's liability tail; make approve/decline/conditional decisions with a documented rationale
• Set reserves, holdbacks, volume caps and exposure limits
• Run portfolio re-reviews, adjust terms as merchant risk changes, maintain a watchlist/escalation path, track realized losses back into the framework
• Build and maintain underwriting policy, scorecard, and exposure reporting to a standard that satisfies a bank/auditor
• Use AI/data tooling to speed up file review and decisioning
• Partner with Sales, Treasury Ops, Risk/Compliance, and support bank/acquirer diligence

What We're Looking For

• 2-3 years of experience in corporate debt analysis and underwriting - venture debt, growth lending, revenue-based finance, private credit, commercial banking, or a startup lending book
• That experience should include underwriting startups and privately held companies.You should be comfortable forming a view from incomplete, unaudited, fast-moving financials if needed. 
• Demonstrated ownership of a credit decision: you have written the memo, taken a position, and defended it to a committee or a decision-maker
• Fluency with financial statements, cash flow analysis, runway, burn and unit economics
• Advanced Excel (comfort building models and working with large transaction-level datasets) and some degree of experience in AI enablement of finance and analysis workflows

• Payments/fintech/marketplace/MoR exposure; chargeback/refund/settlement risk
• Rolling reserves, holdbacks, chargeback ratios, card scheme monitoring
• Experience building/improving an underwriting policy or scorecard
• BigQuery or similar
• Digital goods, gaming, creator economy, subscription, or prediction markets

Our Compensation Philosophy!

The annual base salary range for this role is $110,000-$140,000 in New York. This range represents the minimum and maximum annual base salary that Breeze, in good faith, expects to pay for this position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including a candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications.

For candidates outside of New York, compensation will be based on the applicable market and location-based pay range.

The base salary range listed excludes commission (if applicable), equity, and benefits.

In-Office Expectations

Employees based in our New York City, NY office follow a hybrid work model and are expected to work from the office three days per week. Employees based in our Singapore office are expected to work on-site five days per week.

In-office expectations may vary slightly depending on role, team, and business needs. Certain roles that require closer cross-functional collaboration or operational support may have additional requirements, which will be discussed during the interview process.
