Brightrock Games is an independent videogame studio based in Brighton, UK, with a core team of eight people from around the world. Our goal is to create genre-twisting simulation games in which players can experience their own stories. And if we can do it with a quirkily British sense of humour, then all the better!Community is a huge part of what we do, and we pride ourselves on maintaining utmost transparency with our players. We’re like glass. No, water. Air?Our first game, War for the Overworld, is a highly-praised dungeon management game which launched in 2015 for Windows, Mac and Linux. The game was a runaway success on Kickstarter, and it continues to grow and attract new players. We’re also now hard at work on our next title: watch this space!

We are a plucky, independent, fully-remote video game studio primarily based in the UK, and makers of the widely praised and highly-rated Galacticare and War for the Overworld.

The core team has joined together from all over the world because of a shared passion for building brighter universes. Our goal is to continue creating genre-twisting 3D simulation and management games; and if we can do it with a quirkily British sense of humour, then all the better!

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Environment Artist to join the team working on Kaiju Cleanup for a 12-month contract.

You will be joining a highly passionate team of developers, helping us push and blend the boundaries of traditional game genres. As a Senior Environment Artist, you will be responsible for shaping the visual identity of our worlds, translating high-level design concepts into immersive, readable, and technically sound 3D environments.

We are looking for someone who has demonstrable experience in creating stylised or semi-realistic environments, architectural storytelling, thrives on the unique challenges of building assets for novel games within a tight-knit indie team and has a keen eye for art quality and lighting.

Key Responsibilities

1 - Direct the Environment Art

  • Direct the visual style, quality bar, and reference standards for all levels within Kaiju Cleanup, working with the Environment Art team and Designers and within the game's overall art direction.
  • Provide guidance to the art team on best practices for environment workflows, including modularity and trim sheets and procedural generation techniques.
  • Review the environmen t asset list and sign off on finished environment work before it's considered complete.

2 - Build the Levels

  • Model and texture a wide range of assets, from modular building kits to unique "hero" props, and create, set-dress, and polish high-quality 3D environments that support gameplay and hold up within tight performance constraints. Work within Unity to set up materials, develop prototype block-outs and implement final art assets.
  • Embed Kaiju into environments, working closely with Character Art and Design to solve concept and technical issues, and there is a path of destruction modelled that fits the storytelling.
  • Technical Art Integration: Work with the VFX and Lighting team to bring environments to life, ensuring lighting fits the visual direction.

3 - Liaise for the Environment Art Team

  • Work with the Design team to ensure environments are functional for gameplay mechanics and UI requirements, as well as ensuring Kaiju related gameplay isn’t hindered by the environment.
  • Work with the Production team, who owns the asset list and schedule, to ensure when environment art priorities are set by production, they become the working priorities of the Environment Art team, raising blockers to production as needed.
  • Work with the Technical team to ensure environments are performant and any required optimisations are factored into the overall visual direction of the environments.

Requirements

  • Senior Level Experience: You have a portfolio demonstrating high-quality environment work on at least one shipped title on PC/Console.
  • 3D Mastery: Expert proficiency in industry-standard tools like (Blender or 3ds Max).
  • Texturing Expertise: Deep understanding of PBR workflows (Substance Suite preferred).
  • Unity Native: Extensive experience working directly within Unity, including Prefab management, ProBuilder (or similar), and the Universal Render Pipeline (URP) or ability to quickly learn if experience has mostly been in Unreal.
  • Artistic Eye: A strong grasp of composition, colour theory, and lighting to guide the player’s eye within complex scenes.
  • Indie Spirit: You’ll have a passion for working in a small indie games development team, where collaboration matters more than titles, and everyone contributes to creating something special.

Nice to have

  • Performance Optimization: Experience managing draw calls, LODs, and texture atlasing to keep our games running smoothly.
  • Technical Art Skills: Ability to tweak lighting within Unity to help deliver the scene.
  • Procedural General Skills: Ability to use tools like Houdini to speed up environment art creation.

Please Note: This is a 12-month contract, remote-working position, open to anyone within the UK & Europe.
