Role Purpose

The Marketing Data Scientist will develop data science solutions to improve marketing effectiveness and help the British Council achieve its strategic and commercial objectives. The role will apply analytics, machine learning and statistics to customer and marketing data to deliver actionable insights and scalable products.

The role will design and implement models to improve marketing effectiveness, customer growth and commercial performance, and translate marketing and commercial challenges into data science projects with clear success measures. Working with marketing, product, CRM, finance and other teams, the role will define requirements and deliver solutions, while collaborating with data engineers to combine web, advertising-platform, CRM and sales data into trusted datasets. The role will apply statistical and machine learning techniques to segmentation, propensity, churn, lifetime value and forecasting, and develop marketing measurement approaches using experimentation, incrementality and attribution where appropriate. All work will comply with data ethics, privacy, consent and governance standards. The role will communicate insights, uncertainty and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, contribute to marketing data products from MVP through to production and ongoing monitoring, and mentor colleagues and promote data science and marketing measurement best practice.

Role Accountabilities

Data Science & Modelling

Develop and deploy models for marketing effectiveness, acquisition, retention and customer lifetime value. Define analytical questions, hypotheses and business-linked success metrics, and design experiments and apply causal inference, MMM or attribution where appropriate.

Data & Analytics

Reconcile web, advertising-platform, CRM and sales data into trusted analytical datasets, and partner with data engineers on scalable pipelines and analytical tables. Quality-assure marketing data and investigate tracking, tagging and reconciliation issues.

Insight & Business Impact

Communicate results, uncertainty and recommendations clearly to decision-makers, and embed analytical outputs into campaign, planning, budgeting and CRM workflows.

Governance & Best Practice

Apply data ethics, privacy, consent and governance standards. Mentor colleagues, share best practice and contribute to the data science community.

Knowledge & Experience

Education

Essential:

  • Degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, economics, econometrics, computer science or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Equivalent professional experience may be considered if a degree is not held.
  • Certifications in cloud technologies, analytics or digital measurement are desirable but not required.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development in data science, statistics and marketing measurement techniques and practices.

Experience

Essential:

  • Proven experience (3+ years) in data science or advanced analytics, including marketing or customer analytics.
  • Strong SQL and Python (preferred) or R skills, including tested and reusable analytical code.
  • Experience applying statistical modelling, machine learning, experimental design and causal inference.
  • Experience with customer or marketing modelling such as segmentation, propensity, churn, LTV, forecasting, MMM or attribution.
  • Experience using web and digital marketing data, such as GA4 and paid-media platforms, alongside CRM or sales data.
  • Understanding of funnels, attribution, incrementality, ROI/ROAS and campaign performance.
  • Experience with large or messy datasets, including data quality, reconciliation, privacy and consent.
  • Strong data visualisation and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working cross-functionally and using Git-based version control on shared codebases.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a commercial, education technology or international marketing environment.
  • Familiarity with Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, BigQuery, Snowflake or equivalent.
  • Experience with data transformation or ingestion tools such as Supermetrics or Fivetran.
  • Hands-on experience with MMM, incrementality, causal measurement, attribution or marketing effectiveness.
  • Familiarity with GA4, major paid-media platforms and campaign tracking conventions.
  • Knowledge of Agile or product delivery and experience working with data or ML engineers.
