Engineering Manager

We're growing quickly and are looking for an Engineering Managerto lead our engineering team, build a high-performing engineering culture, and ensure we consistently deliver high-quality software.

This role combines people leadership, delivery management, and engineering excellence. You'll create an environment where engineers can do their best work while partnering closely with Product, Design, QA, and Leadership to deliver reliable software at a predictable pace.

What You'll Do

Lead Your Engineering Team

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of software engineers through regular feedback, mentoring, and career development
• Build a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
• Set clear expectations and help engineers grow both technically and professionally
• Foster an environment where engineers are empowered to make good decisions and take ownership of their work

Own Engineering Delivery

• Own engineering execution for your team and ensure projects are delivered on time and with high quality
• Create predictable delivery through effective planning, prioritization, estimation, and follow-through
• Coordinate work with other engineering teams and cross-functional partners
• Identify delivery risks early, remove blockers, and keep projects moving
• Ensure engineering work is well planned, clearly defined, and ready for implementation before development begins

Improve Engineering Processes

• Continuously improve engineering processes to increase productivity, quality, and predictability
• Drive effective planning, retrospectives, delivery reviews, and release planning
• Improve estimation accuracy and engineering planning
• Establish scalable development processes that enable teams to deliver consistently
• Use engineering metrics and data to continuously improve team performance and delivery

Drive Engineering Excellence

• Promote high standards for software architecture, code quality, automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD, and production reliability
• Support technical discussions and architectural decisions while empowering engineers to own implementation details
• Champion the effective use of AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and delivery speed
• Ensure systems remain reliable, secure, observable, and scalable as the platform grows
• Continuously improve engineering practices and reduce technical debt where appropriate
• Lead incident response and postmortems, ensuring lessons learned result in lasting improvements

Collaborate Across Teams

• Partner closely with Product Managers to translate business priorities into actionable engineering plans
• Work closely with Design, QA, DevOps, and Customer Success to deliver exceptional customer experiences
• Contribute to engineering roadmap planning and long-term technical improvements
• Communicate engineering progress, priorities, risks, and trade-offs clearly to leadership and cross-functional partners

Build and Scale the Team

• Attract, hire, onboard, and develop exceptional engineers
• Build a culture that values continuous learning, knowledge sharing, high standards, and continuous improvement
• Help scale the engineering organization as Buildern continues to grow

Measure and Improve

Own and continuously improve engineering performance by tracking metrics such as:

• Delivery predictability
• Sprint commitments
• Lead time and cycle time
• Deployment frequency
• Pull request review time
• Escaped defects
• Production stability
• Team productivity and engineering health

What You'll Bring

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building production software
• 2+ years managing software engineering teams
• Proven experience leading engineering teams in a B2B SaaS environment
• Experience leading engineering teams in a fast-paced, growing company
• Strong technical background building modern web applications and distributed systems
• Demonstrated success improving engineering execution, delivery predictability, and team performance
• Strong understanding of software architecture, engineering best practices, automated testing, CI/CD, and modern development workflows
• Excellent coaching, mentoring, and people management skills
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach to decision-making
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to balance technical excellence with business priorities

Nice to Have

• Experience leading distributed or remote engineering teams
• Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Node.js, GraphQL, or React Native
• Experience scaling engineering teams in a startup or high-growth SaaS company
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, DevOps, observability, and modern deployment practices
• Experience working with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar
