Builders FirstSource (BFS) is executing Project Elevate, a multi-year business transformation that is standardizing core operations on SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition and connected enterprise applications. The Senior Manager, IT – Software Engineering and Development, leads the team responsible for the quality, maintainability, security, and delivery of Project Elevate custom development. This role manages Senior Engineers and other development resources, sets engineering direction and standards, and is accountable for translating business and architecture priorities into clean-core, scalable solutions across SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP). The Senior Manager partners with business, functional, architecture, security, Basis, data, testing, release-management, support, and systems-integration leaders to ensure predictable delivery, strong technical governance, effective talent development, and successful transition of solutions into operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the Project Elevate application-development function and provide accountable management from demand intake and solution design through build, test, deployment, stabilization, and transition to support.
Manage Senior Engineers, engineers, contractors, and delivery partners; establish clear goals, assign work, balance capacity, remove impediments, and hold the team accountable for quality, schedule, documentation, and business outcomes.
Set the technical direction, operating model, development standards, naming conventions, documentation expectations, security requirements, code-review practices, and quality gates for BFS and vendor-delivered application development.
Ensure Senior Engineers translate approved functional requirements into complete technical designs, estimates, development plans, unit-test plans, deployment dependencies, operational documentation, and support readiness.
Govern the design and delivery of RICEFW objects, Fiori applications, CDS views, OData services, APIs, workflows, integrations, extensions, and related SAP and BTP solutions; personally engage in complex, high-risk, or business-critical decisions and escalations.
Champion SAP clean-core principles by prioritizing fit-to-standard, released APIs, zero modification, in-app extensibility, ABAP Cloud/on-stack extensibility, and side-by-side BTP solutions before classical extensions.
Provide governance across SAP S/4HANA, ABAP, RAP, CDS, SAP Fiori/UI5, SAP Gateway/OData, SAP BTP, CAP, SAP Build, HANA Cloud, workflows, events, and API-based integration patterns, ensuring solutions align with enterprise architecture and product roadmaps.
Establish and monitor engineering quality measures, including technical-specification approval, peer review, automated and manual code checks, performance analysis, secure coding, test evidence, defect trends, technical debt, transport readiness, and production stability.
Partner with functional and business leaders early in solution discussions to assess standard capabilities, clarify gaps, compare extensibility options, and make transparent decisions that balance business value, maintainability, risk, cost, delivery speed, and upgrade compatibility.
Coordinate with Enterprise Architecture, Integration, Security, Basis, Data, Testing, Release Management, and application owners to resolve cross-system dependencies and deliver integrated end-to-end capabilities.
Own development portfolio planning, estimates, resource forecasts, delivery commitments, risks, dependencies, status reporting, and release readiness; communicate decisions and tradeoffs clearly to program and technology leadership.
Oversee controlled deployment through approved change and transport processes and ensure appropriate cutover support, production validation, hypercare, root-cause analysis, remediation, operational monitoring, and knowledge transfer.
Manage systems integrators, offshore teams, contractors, and software-development partners; review estimates, staffing, designs, code-quality outcomes, test results, delivery plans, and knowledge-transfer progress, and take corrective action when expectations are not met.
Develop reusable engineering patterns, templates, accelerators, automation, technical roadmaps, and continuous improvements to the software-development lifecycle, DevSecOps practices, release processes, and support model.
Recruit, onboard, coach, mentor, and retain technical talent; conduct regular performance and development conversations, create succession and capability-development plans, and build a culture of ownership, collaboration, inclusion, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.
Maintain sufficient technical depth to challenge designs, guide engineers, resolve escalations, evaluate emerging SAP capabilities, and represent the development function in architecture and governance forums.
