Electrical Quality Engineer

Busek is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Electrical Quality Engineer to join our growing team. The Electrical Quality Engineer will be responsible for overseeing product quality and quality assurance activities for electrical hardware, including Power Processing Units (PPUs), printed circuit boards, and electronic assemblies used in aerospace and propulsion systems. This role will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, contract manufacturers, suppliers, program management, and supply chain to ensure products meet engineering requirements, customer expectations, and applicable quality standards. Key responsibilities include contract manufacturer oversight, product documentation, inspection and testing, nonconformance management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • PPU and Electronics Quality: Oversee product quality for Power Processing Units (PPUs), printed circuit boards (PCBs), printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), bare boards, and circuit card assemblies (CCAs) throughout manufacturing, inspection, testing, and repair.

  • Product EIDP Management: Develop, manage, review, and approve End Item Data Packages (EIDPs), ensuring required quality records, inspection results, test data, and supporting documentation are complete, accurate, and compliant with contractual and product requirements.

  • Contract Manufacturer Quality Oversight: Routinely verify and validate critical manufacturing, assembly, inspection, and test processes at contract manufacturer facilities. Conduct onsite visits as needed to investigate issues, assess process compliance, and ensure manufacturing activities meet engineering requirements and applicable quality standards.

  • Test Plan Development and Execution: Develop, execute, review, and redline detailed test plans and procedures for PCB and electronic assemblies. Identify gaps, edge cases, and potential failure modes in test coverage.

  • Electronics Debugging and Failure Analysis: Troubleshoot PCB and electronic assembly failures at the component, board, and system levels using schematics, test equipment, and diagnostic methods to identify root causes.

  • Automated and Manual Testing: Develop and execute manual and automated test procedures for electronic hardware. Write or modify test scripts to support functional testing, validation, troubleshooting, and failure analysis.

  • Test Equipment and Software: Utilize laboratory equipment and software tools, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, electronic loads, and LabVIEW or Python-based test and automation tools.

  • PCB and PCBA Inspection: Inspect incoming PCB materials, bare boards, and circuit card assemblies for compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, purchase order requirements, and applicable quality standards.

  • Engineering Documentation Review: Review electrical schematics, Gerber files, PCB layouts, assembly drawings, and related technical documentation to verify manufacturing and inspection requirements.

  • Manufacturing Inspection and Test Methods: Oversee and evaluate inspection and test methods, including Automated Optical Inspection (AOI), automated X-ray inspection (AXI), and flying probe testing, to identify defects and verify product quality.

  • Root Cause and Corrective Action: Develop and manage product root cause corrective action (RCCA) investigations and 8D reports. Determine root causes of manufacturing defects, implement corrective and preventive actions, and verify their effectiveness.

  • Material Review Board (MRB): Chair and coordinate product MRBs, working with engineering, manufacturing, quality, program management, and supply chain to evaluate nonconforming materials and determine appropriate dispositions.

  • Nonconformance Management: Manage and facilitate product nonconformance reports (NCs), including documentation, investigation, disposition, corrective action, and closure.

  • Diagnostic Work Instructions: Develop, maintain, and own the execution of diagnostic work instructions in Manufacturo, ensuring procedures are clear, controlled, and consistently followed.

  • Repair and Rework Instructions: Develop and manage repair and rework instructions for contract manufacturers, coordinating with engineering and quality teams to ensure approved methods are followed and product requirements are maintained.

  • EIDP Artifact Management: Collect, review, and manage EIDP artifacts associated with diagnostic activities, repairs, and rework, ensuring traceability and completeness of product records.

  • Material Management Support: Support Program Management and Supply Chain with material planning, tracking, and coordination associated with diagnostic, repair, and rework activities.

  • Process Capability and Quality Metrics: Monitor manufacturing process capability and product quality metrics using Statistical Process Control (SPC). Identify trends, investigate process variation, and drive improvements in manufacturing consistency and product reliability.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with electrical, mechanical, systems, manufacturing, test, program management, and supply chain teams to resolve hardware quality issues, coordinate corrective actions, and improve product reliability.

  • Customer and Supplier Quality: Support customer-facing quality activities and communicate technical quality issues, corrective actions, inspection results, and test findings to customers and external manufacturing partners as required.

  • Documentation and Continuous Improvement: Maintain accurate records of inspections, test results, nonconformances, investigations, repairs, and corrective actions. Identify recurring quality issues and implement improvements to manufacturing, inspection, testing, and quality control processes.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in PCB/PCBA quality engineering, electronics manufacturing, hardware test, electronics validation, or a closely related field.

  • PCB/Electronics Experience: Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and debugging electronic assemblies and working with schematics, PCB layouts, components, and electronic test equipment.

  • Quality Engineering: Experience with root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), 8D problem solving, nonconformance management, MRB activities, and quality documentation.

  • EIDP and Product Documentation: Experience preparing, reviewing, or managing product quality documentation, inspection records, test records, or end item data packages.

  • Test Experience: Experience developing, executing, and troubleshooting hardware test plans and procedures, including manual and automated testing.

  • Programming/Automation: Experience writing or modifying test scripts using Python, LabVIEW, or a similar programming or automation environment.

  • Manufacturing Experience: Experience working with PCB/PCBA contract manufacturers, electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers, or other external manufacturing partners.

  • Inspection and Test Methods: Familiarity with PCB/PCBA inspection and test methods, including AOI, X-ray inspection, flying probe testing, or similar techniques.

  • Test Equipment: Proficiency with common electronic laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, electronic loads, and signal or function generators.

  • Engineering Documentation: Ability to interpret electrical schematics, Gerber files, PCB layouts, assembly drawings, and technical specifications.

  • Quality Standards: Familiarity with quality standards and electronics manufacturing practices, including IPC standards, ISO 9001, AS9100, or similar quality systems.

  • Communication and Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, program management, supply chain, and supplier teams.

  • Travel: Ability to travel up to 10%, including occasional onsite visits to contract manufacturer facilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting aerospace, propulsion, defense, or other high-reliability electronics.

  • Experience with Power Processing Units (PPUs), power electronics, or complex electronic assemblies.

  • Experience managing EIDPs and product quality documentation for aerospace or defense hardware.

  • Experience working directly with contract manufacturers on PCB/PCBA quality, manufacturing issues, process verification, and corrective actions.

  • Experience with RCCA, 8D investigations, supplier corrective actions, MRBs, nonconformance reports, and customer quality issues.

  • Familiarity with IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, IPC-6012, or other PCB/PCBA manufacturing and inspection standards.
