Full-Stack Developer (Laravel, Flutter & WordPress)

Auction Calendar is a growing digital platform that connects buyers with auctions across South Africa. We help auction companies put their properties, vehicles, agricultural assets, machinery and other auction items in front of the right audience, through our website and mobile app.

As we grow, we are bringing our technology in-house, and we are looking for a full-stack developer to own the platform behind it all.

You will own our live web platform, mobile app and websites end to end, and be the go-to person for the codebase, the server and anything that breaks. You will also work closely with the development agency that built our platform and manage shared projects with them.

The design system and core application and server architecture are already in place, so this role focuses on building, maintaining and running the product rather than creative direction.

Our stack

• Web: PHP / Laravel / Livewire / Filament, REST API, WordPress

• Mobile: Dart / Flutter (Android and iOS) / Provider

• DevOps and integrations: PayGate, Xero, Amazon Web Services, GitHub, Google Cloud Platform (Maps API and Analytics), Firebase 

• Maintain and extend our Laravel web platform, including new features and bug fixes.

• Build and maintain our Flutter app for Android and iOS, including App Store and Google Play releases.

• Create, maintain and update our WordPress websites, including themes, plugins, updates, performance and security.

• Manage our AWS hosting: deployments, backups, monitoring, scaling and cost control.

• Own security: patching, access control, SSL, data protection and POPIA compliance.

• Look after integrations, especially the payment gateway, and fix production issues quickly.

• Run a safe release process: test on staging, deploy with a rollback plan, verify after release.

• Keep clear documentation so the system never depends on one person’s memory.

• Estimate work honestly and explain technical decisions in plain language to non-technical management.

• Brief and manage other outside help (such as a UX designer) when needed.  

Working with our development agency

Our platform was built by an external development agency, and they remain an important partner. You will be our technical lead on our side of that relationship:

• Work alongside the agency day to day, sharing knowledge of the codebase and infrastructure.

• Plan and manage joint projects: scoping, timelines, priorities and sign-off.

• Review the agency’s code, pull requests and estimates to make sure work meets our standards.

• Decide, together with management, which work is done in-house and which goes to the agency.

• Translate business needs into clear technical briefs for the agency.

• 5+ years of professional development experience, with at least 3 years on Laravel in production.

• Flutter: at least one app you built or maintained that is live on both the App Store and Google Play.

• WordPress: building and maintaining WordPress websites, including custom themes, plugin management, updates and security hardening.

• AWS: hands-on experience running production servers (Ubuntu, Apache, MySQL, EC2, RDS, S3), not only deploying to them.

• Databases: MySQL or PostgreSQL, including query optimisation, migrations and backups.

• APIs: building and maintaining REST APIs for mobile apps, and integrating services such as Firebase, Firebase Cloud Messaging and payment gateways.

• Security: POPIA compliance, web security basics (OWASP Top 10), server hardening and handling sensitive data.

• Git and CI/CD: version control, code reviews and automated deployments.

• Production support: a track record of diagnosing and fixing live incidents, including rolling back safely.

• Project management: experience planning and running technical projects with external developers or agencies.

• Independence: experience working as the sole or lead developer on a live product.

Bonus points for

• AWS certification (such as Solutions Architect Associate)

• Experience with South African payment gateways (PayFast, Peach Payments or Paystack)

• Docker and Laravel Sail

• Meilisearch and Laravel Scout

• Automated testing (PHPUnit or Pest, Flutter tests)

• WooCommerce or custom WordPress plugin development

Our selection process

3. Technical interview with an independent senior developer, including real-world scenarios.

4. A short, trial task on our staging environment, never on the live site.

5. Offer, followed by an onboarding period working alongside our development agency.
