Campfire is building the AI-native ERP for modern finance teams, backed by a $65M Series B from Accel and Ribbit Capital. Our engineering org is ~30 people today and scaling to ~100. We're hiring a Director of Engineering to own that organization end to end who stays focused on product and technical direction. You'll lead through a bench of engineering managers, own delivery and operational health across the whole org, and be accountable for building an engineering team that enterprise finance customers can bet their books on.
Responsibilities
Own engineering as a whole: org design, team structure, staffing model, and how the org scales from 30 to 75 without losing velocity or quality
Hire, lead, and develop a leadership bench of Directors and engineering managers; set the bar for what good leadership looks like here
Own the hiring plan and engineering brand: headcount forecasting, recruiting strategy, leveling, compensation philosophy, and closing senior talent
Run the operating system of engineering: planning cadence, roadmap commitments with product and GTM, metrics, and predictable delivery across teams
Own operational and production excellence for a financial-systems company: on-call, incident response, SLOs, release and change management, and disaster recovery that hold up to enterprise and audit scrutiny
Partner with the CTO on technical strategy and architecture direction; own execution and the technical standards that make it real
Own engineering's role in enterprise readiness: SOC 2 and security reviews, AI governance, identity and authorization (SSO, OAuth, MCP auth), and customer-facing technical escalations
Manage the engineering budget, vendor and infrastructure spend, and build-vs-buy decisions
Serve on the executive team: contribute to company strategy, board materials, and cross-functional decisions with the CEO, CTO, and peers
Qualifications
15+ years in software engineering, including 8+ years in engineering leadership and 3+ years leading through directors or senior managers
Has run an engineering org of 50+ and scaled one through a growth phase comparable to 30 → 75
Built or operated systems where correctness and auditability are non-negotiable: fintech, accounting, payments, or ERP
Technically deep enough to hold the line on architecture and earn the trust of senior ICs, without needing to be the smartest person in the room
Track record of hiring and developing engineering leaders, including managers who went on to run orgs themselves
Experience taking a product through enterprise security and compliance (SOC 2, SSO/SAML, vendor security reviews) at scale
Judgment about running LLMs and agents in production - evaluation, observability, cost, and reliability
Executive-level communicator: credible with the board, with customers, and with engineers, and able to give hard feedback kindly
Bonus
Experience partnering closely with a technical founder-CTO
Familiarity with revenue recognition, GAAP close, or accounting integrations (Stripe, Deel, Rippling, banks, payroll)
Experience with MCP or building integrations for AI platforms
Depth in Python and relational databases
Prior startup experience at Series B through C or later
