Canopius is a global specialty lines (re)insurer. We believe that our people make us different. We challenge the prevailing wisdom, we ask the difficult questions and we are proud to offer an independent view of risk.

The Role

Canopius is a global specialty lines (re)insurer. We are one of the leading insurers in the Lloyd’s of London insurance market with offices in the UK, US, Singapore, Australia and Bermuda.

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Underwriter to join Canopius in London. The role will support the underwriting and development of a worldwide portfolio of construction and engineering risks, including Contractors All Risks and Erection All Risks, within the wider Natural Resources and Heavy Industries proposition. You will combine disciplined risk selection and technical underwriting judgement with strong broker and client engagement, contributing to profitable portfolio growth and the continued development of Canopius’ market expertise in complex engineering risks.

Responsibilities will include

  • Execute new and renewal underwriting in line with the business plan, underwriting authority, risk appetite, underwriting guidelines and documentation standards.

  • Assess complex engineering and construction risks, applying technical underwriting analysis to risk quality, pricing, terms, conditions, limits and attachment points.

  • Contribute to the creation and revision of underwriting guidelines, policies and frameworks for Engineering insurance products across a range of risk sizes.

  • Act as a technical subject matter expert, providing advice on Engineering products, services, priorities and target markets and helping brokers and clients understand material risk exposures.

  • Use risk analytics, portfolio information and market insight to support account and portfolio decisions, identify concentrations and opportunities, and contribute to plans to increase Canopius’ share in target segments.

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders, representing Canopius positively in market meetings and relevant industry forums.

  • Contribute to business development and product development opportunities, including collaboration across Natural Resources and other relevant underwriting teams.

  • Monitor market conditions, emerging technologies, regulation and loss trends relevant to construction and engineering risks and translate these developments into underwriting decisions.

  • Support peer review, underwriting governance, audits and the consistent application of underwriting standards and controls.

  • Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing to colleagues, contributing to the development of underwriting capability across the team.

And other ad hoc duties as required.

Relevant Skills and Experience

  • Strong technical knowledge of Engineering and Construction insurance, with experience of underwriting complex risks in the London and/or international specialty insurance market.

  • Experience assessing construction and engineering exposures, including Contractors All Risks and Erection All Risks.

  • Strong risk selection, technical underwriting analysis, pricing and negotiation capability.

  • Ability to interpret technical risk information and use data and analysis to support underwriting decisions.

  • Good understanding of portfolio management, market dynamics and the external environment affecting engineering and construction risks.

  • Commercially minded, with the ability to develop business opportunities while maintaining underwriting discipline.

  • Confident communicator able to build effective relationships with brokers, clients and colleagues across multiple disciplines.

  • Ability to contribute to underwriting strategy, product development and continuous improvement.
