Job description
Why you might enjoy this role
Build a model. See it shape a pricing decision. Understand what that decision means for revenue and profit.
If you enjoy seeing your analysis put to use, that’s the appeal of this role in Castrol’s Global Pricing Team. You’ll work on real commercial questions, with the aim of tracing your recommendations through to their impact on the business.
The team already brings pricing and commercial knowledge. You’ll help build the deeper data science and operations research capability alongside it, turning business questions into models and tools people can use.
You don’t need to arrive as a pricing expert. If you bring strong mathematical modelling skills and know how to turn an analysis into a repeatable process, the team can help you learn the pricing side.
What you’ll work on and what success looks like
Take price elasticity as an example. You could work with pricing colleagues to understand the question, develop the methodology, connect the data sources and build a tool that calculates and delivers the results automatically.
That end-to-end thinking is central to the role. You’ll look beyond an individual model or dashboard to understand how the whole process could work better.
Your work will include:
- Building and refining models for demand forecasting, price sensitivity, willingness to pay and price optimisation.
- Comparing pricing and portfolio scenarios to understand their likely revenue and margin impact.
- Analysing how discounts, trade spend, product mix and customer segments affect the revenue we retain.
- Turning analysis into reusable tools and automated workflows, rather than repeating the same manual work.
- Explaining your methods, results and recommendations clearly so others can use them.
- Success means models that stand up to scrutiny, processes that become faster and more reliable, and analysis that helps the business make better pricing decisions.
The team you’ll join
You’ll join Castrol’s Global Pricing Team, with a reporting line to the Pricing Data Science & Automation Manager, and work with colleagues across Pricing, Sales, Finance and Marketing.
You’ll combine their commercial knowledge with your technical skills. They can help define the pricing problem; you’ll help work out how to solve it through data, modelling and automation.
This is a hybrid office/remote role. No travel is expected, and relocation assistance is not available. Depending on the applicable package, bp benefits can include flexible working options, paid parental leave and retirement benefits.
What you’ll need
You’ll bring a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics, with experience applying data science or operations research to analytical problems. Your experience should go beyond producing reports or dashboards: you’ll need to build models and think through how they can become reliable, repeatable tools.
You’ll also need:
- A university degree or equivalent experience, with evidence of your quantitative and modelling skills through study or practical work.
- An understanding of regression, machine learning, segmentation and optimisation techniques.
- Proficiency in an analytical programming language such as Python or R, alongside strong SQL and data manipulation skills.
- Experience working with large datasets and turning a business question into an analytical approach.
- The ability to automate analytical processes, from preparing the data to delivering usable outputs.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain how you reached a result and what it means.
- Pricing, revenue management or commercial analytics experience would be useful, but it isn’t essential. You may have developed the relevant skills in banking or another industry.
Experience with tools such as Power BI is useful alongside those deeper modelling skills. Familiarity with APIs and automation tools would also help.
