Established in 1982, we have been delivering ground investigation, contamination surveys and geotechnical expertise for over 40 years across Shropshire, Gloucestershire, Birmingham, Warwickshire, Herefordshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire.

We provide a comprehensive range of ground investigation, contamination surveys and geotechnical services to a large and diverse client base spanning construction, infrastructure and environmental sectors.

Part of the Celnor Group

In 2023, GIP became a member of the Celnor Group, a UK-based environmental services group operating across the Testing, Inspection, Certification and Compliance (TICC) landscape.

While each business retains its own identity, culture and technical specialism, all are supported by a central group function that invests in people, systems and long-term sustainable growth.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Geological Engineer / Senior Engineering Geologist to join our team in the Midlands.

The ideal candidate will have around 5-6 years' experience within ground investigation and engineering geology and be working towards, or have already achieved, chartership. This role offers a mixture of site and office-based work, supporting the delivery of ground investigation and consultancy projects across a wide range of geological settings and ground-related challenges.

You will play an important role within our experienced geological team, taking responsibility for technical reporting, project delivery and the development of junior staff. Depending on your experience, you will also have responsibility for managing and mentoring a small team of engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Technical

  • Examine and review geological logging, field testing and field mapping records
  • Plan and oversee ground investigations, including drilling programmes and sample analysis
  • Supervise site investigations and ground investigation works
  • Visit new project sites and provide technical input into project planning
  • Provide advice on geological and ground-related issues, including subsidence, mining legacy and contamination
  • Produce and review high-quality geological logs, records and interpretative reports
  • Make recommendations regarding site development and ground conditions

Project and Commercial Management

  • Manage projects and support successful delivery for clients
  • Provide quotations and technical proposals
  • Manage and support engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers, consultants and contractors
  • Build and maintain positive client relationships
  • Represent GIP at professional conferences and industry events

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Promote Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) standards across all projects
  • Ensure works are completed in accordance with company procedures and industry best practice
  • Lead by example and promote safe working behaviours across the team

Team Development

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior geologists and reporting staff
  • Support training and professional development across the team
  • Assist with the management and development of less experienced colleagues

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Earth Science, Geoscience or a related discipline
  • Minimum 5-6 years' experience within ground investigation, engineering geology or a related field
  • Strong experience in geological logging, ground investigation and technical reporting
  • Good project management skills
  • Experience using geotechnical software such as OpenGround and HoleBASE
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Full UK driving licence (manual transmission)
  • Ability to mentor and support junior staff

What We're Looking For

We are looking for an experienced engineering geologist who is technically strong, enjoys solving complex ground-related problems and is keen to continue developing their knowledge and expertise.

The successful candidate will be comfortable balancing technical delivery, project management and team development responsibilities. You will enjoy mentoring junior colleagues, building client relationships and contributing to the continued growth of the business.

Join Us

You will be joining a business where your contribution matters and where professionalism and teamwork are genuinely valued. The majority of our geologists started with us as graduates and we have a strong track record of developing our people and providing clear opportunities to progress.

As part of the wider Celnor Group, you will benefit from group-wide investment, shared expertise and opportunities to develop your career as the organisation continues to grow.

Salary and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary dependent on experience, along with the following benefits:

  • 31 days holiday inclusive of all bank holidays and our Christmas shutdown
  • Regular reviews and appraisals with salary progression as you develop
  • Hybrid working, balancing office, home and site
  • Company pension scheme
  • Access to company vehicles for work use
  • Laptop, mobile phone, GIP branded workwear and all PPE provided
  • Professional fees covered (e.g. FGS)
  • Internal and external training
  • £1,000 bonus on attaining chartership
