CERN is the world’s leading laboratory for particle physics, where scientists study the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that govern the universe. Located near Geneva, it operates the Large Hadron Collider, the largest and most powerful particle accelerator ever built, to conduct groundbreaking research into the origin of matter. Beyond pure science, the organization is also famous for pioneering technological innovations, including the invention of the World Wide Web, which continue to have a massive global impact.

As part of the Technical Coordination team for the CMS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), you will join the Safety Team and familiarise yourself with CERN and CMS safety systems and alarms, hazard identification and risk assessment processes, as well as CMS infrastructure and computing tools.

Your responsibilities

  • Support the CMS LEXGLIMOS (Large Experiment Group Leader in Matters of Safety), working closely with the CMS Technical Coordination team and contributing to implementing CERN's safety objectives within CMS and defining the associated priorities and timelines.
  • Contribute to drafting and reviewing risk assessments and procedures for projects, works, areas and activities, and to updating the associated Safety File, particularly in support of the LS3 CMS upgrade.
  • Help manage and assess the fire safety compliance of materials used in the CMS Phase II Upgrade Projects, including follow-up risk assessments for potentially non-compliant materials.
  • Perform incident analyses and follow up on the implementation of safety actions and safety measures to support continuous improvement.
  • Support emergency preparedness activities within CMS, including the coordination and organisation of planned evacuations.

Your profile

  • Basic experience in engineering (safety, industrial, mechanical, or a related field).
  • Exposure to laboratory, workshop, or technical environments.
  • Initial experience (through academic projects, internships, or similar activities) in risk assessment, hazard identification, fire safety, and related safety measures.
  • Familiarity with data handling, reporting, and technical documentation.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary or team-based projects.

Skills

  • Initial experience in occupational safety and risk management, including assessing workplace activities, identifying hazards, and analysing risks.
  • Knowledge of safety-related projects in complex industrial or scientific facilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to draft safety documentation and deliver oral presentations in at least one of CERN's two official languages (English or French).
  • Proactive, organised, and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen interest in safety, engineering, and project delivery.
  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Safety or Industrial Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Job closing date: 08.10.2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Job flexibility: Fully Onsite

Target start date: 01-January-2027

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • Residence in the immediate vicinity of the Organization's installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
