CesiumAstro is an American company founded in Austin in 2017 that builds active phased array communications payloads for satellites, aircraft and defence platforms. Its systems are software-defined and electronically steered, which lets a moving platform track several links at once without mechanical antennas, and the company manufactures them in house rather than integrating third-party subsystems. It sells mainly to defence customers and satellite operators, has raised venture funding from investors including Airbus Ventures and Lightspeed, and operates facilities in Austin, Colorado and the United Kingdom.

We are looking to add a Radiation Effects Engineer II to our team. If you enjoy working in a startup environment and are passionate about developing the next generation of space systems, we would like to hear from you.

In this postion, you will design, analyze, and verify radiation effects impacting electronic components and systems for products and platforms. This role contributes to product development by evaluating radiation susceptibility, supporting mitigation strategies, and performing analyses and testing that ensure products satisfy technical, reliability, and mission requirements for space environments.

Working cross-functionally with electrical, hardware, FPGA, systems, software, mechanical, manufacturing, integration and test, quality, and program teams, this role supports radiation effects analysis, testing, and mitigation throughout the product development lifecycle.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform radiation effects analyses for electronic components, integrated circuits, and electrical subsystems supporting products and platforms.
  • Develop radiation assessments, component evaluations, shielding analyses, and worst-case analyses supporting radiation-tolerant hardware designs.
  • Evaluate radiation environments, component performance, engineering data, and technical documentation while supporting radiation effects design decisions.
  • Perform radiation testing, characterization, data reduction, and design validation activities supporting product qualification.
  • Analyze total ionizing dose (TID), single event effects (SEE), displacement damage, laboratory measurements, and engineering data while resolving routine technical issues.
  • Support design verification, root cause investigations, engineering changes, qualification testing, and product integration activities.
  • Collaborate with electrical, hardware, FPGA, systems, software, mechanical, manufacturing, integration and test, quality, and program teams supporting radiation effects engineering activities.
  • Develop radiation analyses, technical reports, test procedures, qualification documentation, and design review materials supporting engineering decisions.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, hardware integration, and engineering investigations.
  • Maintain radiation analysis documentation, test results, qualification records, and configuration-controlled technical data.
  • Apply radiation analysis methodologies, engineering standards, customer requirements, and organizational procedures throughout product development.
  • Develop improvements that enhance radiation tolerance, product reliability, and design quality.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree with 2-5 years of related experience, or Master's degree with 0-3 years of related experience in electrical engineering, physics, nuclear engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • Direct experience performing many or all of the responsibilities listed above.
  • Direct experience working with automotive and high volume commercial grade parts in radiation environments.
  • Good understanding of the radiation physics relevant to electronic components.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication ability.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with ray tracing tools such as FASTRAD
  • Experience with radiation susceptibility of RF components including III-V transistors (GaAs, Gan)
  • Specialization of SEE analysis and test of complex digital devices such as FPGAs, processors, and memories (RAM and NVM)
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Circuit Theory.
  • Basic programming and scripting, such as Python.
  • Managing databases of component test data.
