The Applications Development Senior Supervisor is an intermediate management level position responsible for providing full leadership and direction to a team of employees in an effort to establish and implement new or revised application systems and programs in coordination with the Technology team. The overall objective of this role is to lead applications systems analysis and programming activities.
Responsibilities:
- Manage an Applications Development team of professionals to accomplish established goals and conduct personnel duties for team (e.g. performance evaluations, training and development, hiring and disciplinary actions)
- Recommend new work procedures to increase process efficiencies
- Resolve issues by identifying and selecting solutions through the applications of acquired technical experience and guided by precedents
- Develop and apply comprehensive knowledge of how own area integrates within apps development and other technical areas
- Ensure the quality of tasks provided by self and others on team as well as influence decisions through advice or facilitating services that impact the team and closely related work teams
- Act as backup to Applications Development Manager and serve as an advisor and coach to junior developers and analysts
- Has the ability to operate with a limited level of direct supervision.
- Can exercise independence of judgement and autonomy.
- Acts as SME to senior stakeholders and /or other team members.
- Ability to manage teams.
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.
Qualifications:
- 5-7 years of relevant experience
- Experience in managing and implementing successful projects
- Ability to take ownership and make technical decisions on software development projects
- Experience with dependency management, change management, continuous integration testing tools, and audit/compliance requirements
- Strong proficiency in Java, Spring, Hibernate, KAFKA, SQL, JUnit, Microservices, Event Driven Designs and Design Patterns.
- Experience working in Agile and Scrum development processes.
- Proficiency with development tools such as GitHub, IntelliJ, SonarQube and container platforms like OpenShift.
- Extensive knowledge of software engineering and object-oriented design
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills
- Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication

The Role:
The Java Developer / Senior Java Developer is a hands-on technical position responsible for building and scaling the next generation of platforms for our core Controls Technology area. Working within an agile scrum team, you will contribute to the design, development, and implementation of high-quality software solutions, ensuring our engineering practices meet high standards of quality and efficiency. This is a role for an engineer who thrives on solving complex technical challenges, collaborating with team members, and contributing directly to a modern codebase.
Responsibilities:
- Develop Scalable Microservices: Design, develop, and maintain highly scalable, containerized Java Spring Boot microservices, actively contributing to the codebase and implementing key features.
- Leverage AI Tooling for Productivity: Utilize and integrate modern AI-powered development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, advanced code analyzers) to accelerate development velocity, enhance code quality, and adopt innovative engineering practices.
- Build Robust System Integrations: Develop and implement high-performance APIs and event-driven integrations to connect platforms with various firm-wide control systems, ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
- Collaborate on Full-Stack Integration: Collaborate closely with frontend engineers to build seamless user experiences, developing the APIs that power modern Micro-Frontend (MFE) applications built with React or Angular.
- Own Feature Development: Take ownership of the development lifecycle for assigned features, from technical design and specifications through to implementation, testing, and deployment in an agile environment.
- Collaborate and Share Best Practices: Participate in code reviews, share knowledge on modern development workflows, and collaborate with team members to maintain high standards of software design, containerization, and data caching.
Qualifications:
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in software development, with a strong track record of building robust backend systems.
- Mandatory Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in Java 17 or above.
- Deep hands-on experience with the Spring Boot framework.
- Solid experience with event streaming and messaging platforms, specifically Apache Kafka.
- Experience with in-memory data stores/caching mechanisms, specifically Redis.
- Strong understanding and practical application of software Design Patterns.
- Foundational SQL skills (minimum requirement for database querying, schema understanding, and data manipulation).
- Good to Have:
- Familiarity with Python (for scripting, automation, or basic development).
- Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (React, Angular) is a plus.
- Professional & Cloud Qualifications:
- Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift) and building cloud-native applications.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of features or small-scale projects within an agile development team.
- A keen interest in or experience with leveraging AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity and code quality.
- Deep understanding of microservice architecture and RESTful API development best practices.
- Experience working in Financial Services or another large, complex global environment is highly desirable.
- Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication.

- Bachelor’s degree/University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
