Job Duties:

The UWM Center for International Education seeks a full-time (100% FTE) Immigration Coordinator (International Education Coordinator) to provide services to all international students including immigration advising and immigration document issuance.

The individual in this position is part of the team that coordinates the university’s compliance with federal regulations by gathering and maintaining Department of Homeland Security-mandated information on international students and scholars and managing timely and accurate data reporting. This individual reports to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services.

Immigration Regulation and Compliance Management

  • Act as a Designated School Official (DSO) on record with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS )
  • Determine eligibility and authorize issuance of F-1/F-2 (I-20s) and J-1/J-2 (DS-2019s) immigration documents through DHS’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database
  • Coordinate issuance of appropriate recommendations for employment authorization with SEVIS

Immigration Advising

  • Responsible for providing immigration advising and counseling to international students regarding government regulations set forth by the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State,
  • Department of Labor and other Federal agencies to maintain their legal student status
  • Individual student, faculty and staff consultations on a variety of issues including but not limited to, on and off campus employment, internship, travel, extension of government documents, authorization for less than full-time enrollment, application to Homeland Security for reinstatement to legal student status, change in education level and major, application to USCIS for change of visa status, bringing family members to the U.S., university transfer procedures within the U.S., and student visa benefits and responsibilities
  • Coordinate prearrival advising for UWM student admits on applying for student visas and counsel students, family members and academic departments when visas are denied.
  • Coordinate required reporting, for new students arrival

Coordinate, create, implement and assist in development and assessment of campus initiatives involving international students

  • Support efforts that encourage the internationalization of the University
  • Serve as liaison with the Center for International Education’s community outreach initiatives to coordinate delivery of programming information to international students

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Schedules logistics and secures and manages resources for various programs to support international students
  • Develops programming and resource materials, within budget guidelines and across various mediums, to provide co-curricular and engagement opportunities to international students
  • Interprets and communicates student rights, responsibilities, and options related to specific requests and situations
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to advocate for international students, promoting their contributions to diverse communities
  • Advises on student visa issues through individual consultations and workshops across various mediums

Department: The Center for International Education (CIE) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee advances UWM’s global mission by supporting international students and scholars, facilitating study abroad opportunities, and building international partnerships. CIE serves as a central hub for international admissions, immigration and visa advising, global learning experiences, and cross-cultural engagement, helping students, faculty, and staff develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.

Compensation: $45,000-$55,000/annually. Salary will be determined by finalist's experience, training, education, and equity-based factors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Citizen or Permanent Residency (required to serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Official (ARO))
  • Strong ability to create written communication that is informative and clear as demonstrated in the cover letter addressing minimum and preferred qualifications
  • A minimum of 2 years experience working in a Post Secondary academic environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree Experience working with diverse student populations
  • 2+ years’ experience working with international students
  • Previous Designated School Official (DSO) Experience with F-1 regulatory interpretation and advising beyond I-20 issuance
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, SEVIS and/or Terra Dotta
