Commonwealth Bank of Australia is the country's largest bank, established by federal legislation in 1911 as a government-owned institution and fully privatised by 1996. It serves roughly one in three Australians across retail deposits, home lending, business banking and institutional markets, and holds the largest share of the domestic mortgage market. The bank has invested unusually heavily in technology for its size, rebuilding its core systems and pushing the CommBank application into a broader financial and lifestyle platform, and it runs the venture arm x15ventures to build and buy adjacent digital businesses.

Staff Software Engineer (AI, Python, AWS)

  • Build AI-powered employee experiences that support career growth, skills uplift and internal mobility across the bank.

  • Join a hands-on engineering team shaping new People experiences while improving scalability, resilience, security and engineering excellence.

  • Work with modern technology across AWS, Python, Node.js, React and AI-powered engineering practices that are becoming part of everyday software delivery at CommBank.

Do work that matters

CommBank is recognised for leading technology, operations and innovation, and the HR Technology team is building a new suite of AI-powered People Experiences for our people. You’ll help deliver this next phase of growth under the Grow Your Career initiative, including Marketplace and broader employee experience capabilities on a multi-year roadmap.

In this role, you’ll combine strong software engineering fundamentals with practical AI capability to design, build and uplift products that are secure, scalable and ready for enterprise use. You’ll also help strengthen existing engineering foundations so teams can move faster with confidence.

See yourself in our team

Be part of the team that helps our people thrive. You’ll join a supportive environment where you can make a meaningful impact, develop your expertise and grow your career. Within HR Technology, the focus is on creating a better day at work through easy-to-use people solutions that support employees and help the Group meet its obligations.

You will:

  • Design, build, deploy and operate cloud-native services and AI-enabled experiences using AWS and modern engineering patterns.

  • Develop production-ready software across Python back-end services, Node.js layers and React-based user interfaces.

  • Contribute to architecture and design decisions, reusable platform components, integration patterns and API-led services across the HR Technology ecosystem.

  • Apply DevSecOps, CI/CD, observability and automation practices to improve security, operability and delivery quality.

  • Build or collaborate on AI agents and AI-powered features within your first three to six months, while helping improve robustness, scalability and governance in the existing codebase.

  • Partner with Product Owners, Data Scientists, Principal Engineers and adjacent crews to deliver measurable outcomes for employee experiences.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

We know great candidates may not meet every requirement listed below. If this opportunity excites you and your experience could add value, we’d love to hear from you. We’re looking for strong engineers who bring curiosity, sound judgment and a practical interest in using AI to solve real problems.

  • Bring strong software engineering capability and experience designing, building, testing and maintaining software solutions in collaborative delivery teams.

  • Have hands-on capability in Python and AWS, with the ability to contribute productively from the outset.

  • Can work across a modern full-stack environment, with experience in or exposure to Node.js and React.

  • Have practical exposure to AI engineering, including prompts, guardrails, evaluation, grounding and building AI solutions that are reliable and minimise hallucinations and bias.

  • Bring strong capability in DevSecOps, CI/CD, automation and engineering quality, with a mindset for improving security, resilience and operational excellence.

  • Nice to have: mobile engineering experience, exposure to HR technology or regulated enterprise environments, and evidence of AI experimentation through side projects, labs or recent hands-on initiatives.
