About CORTO

CORTO is a rapidly growing Australian AI technology company reimagining how legal professionals work and is part of ATI - one of the largest international LegalTech companies. Our AI-powered platform streamlines every day legal tasks - from document drafting, research and matter analysis to intelligent filing and file-management - so lawyers, paralegals, and legal teams can focus on what really matters: delivering expert advice and excellent client service.

We’re rapidly scaling from 80 to 250+ employees, with a highly technical workforce where around 90% of the team are developers and engineers. Working alongside our Sydney-based team of passionate high achievers, you’ll join a fast-growing technology business where things rarely stay the same for long - and if you’re smart, caring, and ambitious, you’ll be in great company.

Meet the Content Systems team

You'll join our Content Systems team. Our Content Systems team is responsible for creating and maintaining key platforms used by our Content Development teams who create and deliver the legally drafted components of our world class software to our clients and law firms. There is a big focus on AI within this team!

As the Lead Engineer you are the technical anchor for the team - the person who owns how work gets designed, built, and shipped, keeps everyone unblocked, and stays hands-on in the code.

What you’ll do

Your focus will be ensuring that the software being developed for internal Content Development teams and our clients meets our high expectations and functions seamlessly so there is minimal impact on them. This team is expanding, and you'll join as our newest Senior Software Engineer working on multiple projects varying from backend services to web applications, proposing new technologies and frameworks along the way to build the next generation of our products.

To make this happen you will:

You'll lead the technical delivery of the Content Systems, working with the support and infrastructure of our wider Engineering organisation. To make this happen, you will:

  • Lead delivery. Own how features are designed, built, and shipped for your team, and keep the work well-sequenced and moving.
  • Make the technical calls. Own the day-to-day design and technology decisions for your team's services, and escalate the truly cross-cutting ones.
  • Stay hands-on. Write production code, take on the hard and risky parts yourself, and lead by example.
  • Hold the quality bar. Set sensible patterns and guardrails, and keep code review, testing, and CI/CD healthy so the team ships with confidence.
  • Keep it fast and reliable. Watch performance on the hot paths along with observability and a sane on-call.
  • Grow the team. Mentor the engineers around you through pairing, review, and honest feedback.
  • Partner with the business. Work closely with product, the wider engineering org, and our team of legal experts to turn ideas into shipped features.

What you’ll bring:

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including time leading the technical delivery of a team.
  • Strong backend depth (.NET / C# preferred) and comfort across the stack, including TypeScript and React.
  • A track record of shipping and running production services, not just building them.
  • A solid grasp of API design, backend architecture, and distributed system principles.
  • Hands-on AWS experience (S3, SQS, Lambda, ECS, IAM, SSM) and experience with Docker and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Good database and data-modelling skills (PostgreSQL) and migrations.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and driving technical direction for a team.
  • Bonus: trunk-based delivery, LLMs and agents, event-driven architecture, observability (e.g. Datadog), and LegalTech.

You are the type of person who

  • Constantly asks the who, what, where, when, and why, seeking deeper understanding and better solutions.
  • Writes pragmatic and simple code that achieves the desired commercial outcome. You understand the trade-offs between quality and velocity and strike the right balance for an early-stage product.
  • Anticipates future needs and builds with extensibility in mind, without over-engineering.
  • Is comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and iterating based on feedback.
  • Collaborates openly and positively, and lifts the team as you go.
  • Is driven to make a real difference through your work, and finds genuine joy in seeing users benefit from what you create.

CORTO is an inclusive, people-first company committed to breaking down institutional barriers that keep people from reaching their potential. If you meet some, but not all the requirements above, we encourage you to still submit your application.

Why join CORTO?

  • Well-funded and global. CORTO is part ofATI - one of the largest international LegalTech companies.
