The Senior Project Engineer (Roadway) is responsible for leading the engineering design team in development and execution of projects throughout from initial concept through successful completion. This role involves coordinating with engineering teams, contractors, and vendors to achieve project goals efficiently. The Project Engineer requires strategic oversight, ensuring project objectives are met efficiently, on time, and within budget while maintaining the highest quality standards. This role involves planning and designing roadway projects for the local municipalities, including Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) funded projects. Work may include complete streets/streetscapes, roadway widening, resurfacing, bicycle and pedestrian paths, intersections, traffic signals, roundabouts, and other roadway improvements. Projects can range from local streets to major highways, covering all phases from early planning to final design.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with clients, engineers, technical staff, and managers across multiple disciplines to deliver high-quality projects on time and within budget.
  • Partner with Project Managers, Senior Engineers, and multidisciplinary teams to assess risks, develop solutions, and resolve complex project challenges.
  • Lead the preparation of technical specifications, review design drawings, and oversee construction administration as the Engineer of Record.
  • Perform roadway design tasks including alignments (horizontal and vertical), typical sections, drainage/hydraulic analysis, erosion control planning, quantity calculations, cost estimating, and overall plan production.
  • Develop project action plans, assign resources, and track progress to ensure timely and efficient project delivery.
  • Prepare and present project updates, progress reports, and recommendations to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Produce construction plans, details, specifications, and cost estimates supported by thorough engineering calculations.
  • Research design alternatives and provide sound technical recommendations.
  • Coordinate with contractors, clients, construction staff, and subconsultants to ensure quality deliverables and regulatory compliance.
  • Share innovative solutions and best practices across project teams to drive efficiency and continuous improvement.
  • Support Project Managers and Senior Engineers by maintaining project documentation and assisting with design tasks as needed.
  • Ensure engineering designs meet client standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational quality benchmarks.
  • Conduct engineering investigations, data analyses, and feasibility studies to support sound project decision-making.
  • Assist with Marketing/Business Development pursuits (RFP/RFQ) by preparing technical approaches, conceptual layouts, and participating in presentations.
  • Maintain and expand professional expertise by participating in workshops, industry publications, professional organizations, and networking opportunities.
  • Travel as needed to perform site investigations, observe construction activities, and support business development efforts, including preparing and reviewing reports and exhibits.

Leadership Duties:

  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead team meetings and coordinate cross-discipline collaboration to achieve project goals.
  • Provide direction on resource management, task prioritization, and technical problem solving.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and training efforts for engineering staff.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support project and organizational needs.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Project, Outlook) with familiarity in Deltek Vantagepoint, Smartsheet, or similar project management platforms.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and inspire a team.
  • Strong collaboration skills with experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively while maintaining adherence to project schedules and budgets.
  • Strong commitment to meeting deadlines and delivering results.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of FDOT Design Manual, Design Standards, the Florida Greenbook, MUTCD, and current design and construction practices.
  • Detail-oriented, quality-focused, reliable, and self-motivated.
  • Valid stated-issued driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering with a P.E. License in the state of Florida. Ability to obtain additional state licensure through reciprocity is a plus.

At least 10+ years of relevant experience in a consulting engineering firm or government agency.

  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, project management, and industry standards.
  • Familiarity in AutoCAD (Civil3D) and/or OpenRoads Designer is a plus.
