Engineering Manager - Java Backend

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager - Java Backend to lead high-performing engineering teams building large-scale, consumer-facing products. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in B2C/D2C platforms, distributed systems, backend architecture, and engineering leadership while driving product innovation at scale. This role requires a blend of technical depth, people leadership, execution excellence, and stakeholder management to deliver highly scalable and reliable backend systems.

The candidate will have responsibilities across the following functions:

Engineering Leadership:

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers, technical leads, and senior developers.
• Drive engineering excellence, delivery predictability, and a high-performance culture.
• Conduct performance reviews, career development discussions, and succession planning.
• Build and scale engineering teams aligned with business growth objectives.

Technical Ownership:

• Own architecture and development of large-scale backend platforms.
• Design and implement highly available, fault-tolerant, and scalable distributed systems.
• Drive technical decisions, architecture reviews, and engineering best practices.
• Ensure platform reliability, security, observability, and operational excellence.

Product and Business Collaboration:

• Partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and Business teams.
• Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Drive roadmap planning, prioritisation, and execution.
• Ensure timely delivery of high-quality product releases.

Delivery and Execution:

• Establish engineering processes, coding standards, and development frameworks.
• Drive Agile execution, sprint planning, and release management.
• Monitor engineering KPIs, including velocity, quality, uptime, and customer impact.
• Lead incident management and production support strategy.

Requirements:

• Strong hands-on experience in Java, Spring Boot, and Microservices Architecture.
• Deep understanding of Distributed Systems Design.
• Expertise in designing and scaling high-traffic backend platforms.
• Strong experience with REST APIs and event-driven architectures.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar messaging systems.
• Strong database knowledge (MySQL, PostgreSQL, NoSQL databases).
• Experience with caching technologies such as Redis.
• Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Strong understanding of system design, scalability, performance optimisation, and reliability engineering.

Leadership Experience:

• 3+ years of engineering management experience.
• Proven track record of leading teams of 10+ engineers.
• Experience managing technical leads and senior engineers.
• Strong stakeholder and cross-functional leadership skills.

Domain Experience (Mandatory):

• Strong experience working in B2C and D2C product companies.
• Experience building high-scale consumer internet products.
• Understanding of customer journeys, engagement, personalisation, and platform scalability.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience building platforms serving millions of users.
• Exposure to AI/ML-powered customer experiences is a plus.
• Experience with modern observability and monitoring tools.
• Prior experience in eCommerce, Marketplace, Consumer Tech, Internet, OTT, or Digital Commerce platforms.
