DNV

DNV is an independent assurance and risk management firm and classification society headquartered in Høvik, near Oslo in Norway, serving the maritime, energy, renewables and healthcare sectors. Formed in 1864 as Det Norske Veritas and owned by a foundation, it employs about 15,000 people in over 100 countries, classifying ships, certifying management systems and advising on oil and gas, power grids and offshore wind. It hires engineers, surveyors, approval engineers, process safety experts, energy market analysts and project managers, along with interns, trainees and business support staff.

The autonomous team in Trondheim is now searching for 2-3 summer students to join us working with state-of-the-art ship autonomy development for the summer 2027.

You will be working with the ReVolt platform, consisting of a 1:20 scale model of the ReVolt in addition to a digital twin of the physical scale model.

ReVolt is an unmanned and zero-emission ship concept designed for short sea shipping along the coast of Norway.

The ReVolt was designed for low energy consumption and the propulsion system is fully electric.

Today, the scale model of the ReVolt vessel includes sensors for estimating own position and motion in addition to LIDAR, stereo camera and a radar for observing the area around ReVolt. ReVolt is equipped with a 5G router, and a SIM card for transmitting data and commands between ReVolt and a remote control station. A connection to cloud storage and computing in Microsoft Azure is also established.

The digital twin, a virtual model, of the ReVolt scale model was developed to test and explore new control algorithms on the digital twin before integrating this control system on the physical model of ReVolt

The summer students will:

  • work on the physical ReVolt model, doing maintenance, implementing new features, control algorithms,
  • focus on the digital twin for incorporating sensor simulations using pyGemini etc,
  • work with situational awareness system using computer vision and sensor fusion algorithms as one of the main topics,
  • will also be working on the Simulation Trust Center (STC) to integrate the ReVolt digital twin on this platform.

Reasons to work with us:

  • Supportive and caring culture. Our international culture embodies diverse colleagues who value teamwork and inclusion across business areas and borders.
  • We offer opportunities for our employees to connect through social and professional networks. Our largest community CONNECT, throws after-works and informal meetings all year long for you to join.

  • Our Høvik office is located in beautiful surroundings by the sea and can offer access to sailboats, kayaks, tennis courts etc. We have more than 30 activity groups for you to join, as well as gym facilities and a kindergarten located on our premises. It is also worth noting that we offer free parking and shuttle buses to and from Skøyen, Lysaker and Sandvika.

We are primarily seeking 3rd and 4th year students with relevant Bachelor/Master Program specialization in:

  • Marine Technology
  • Cybernetics / Robotics
  • Data and AI
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Computer Science / Information Science.

We are looking for curious and motivated students who are interested in autonomous shipping, digital twins and simulation-based development:

  • Curiosity, initiative and a willingness to collaborate with others to solve technical challenges
  • Good communication skills in English. Knowledge of Norwegian is a preference.
  • Interest in the interaction between physical assets and their digital twins
  • Experience with Python programming, Robot Operating System (ROS), computer vision algorithms, sensor fusion principles, data processing, and simulation are an advantage.
  • An interest in pursing project- and master-thesis on topics relevant to the maritime industry.

If you do not meet every qualification listed below, we still encourage you to apply.

Interested? How to apply:
