Its group careers board hires road and civil operators, electricians, engineers and graduates, project managers, surveyors, defence program staff, technicians, cleaners and gardeners across Australia and New Zealand.

The Opportunity

Downer Rail & Transit Systems is seeking Facilities Technicians to join the facilities maintenance team at Auburn Maintenance Centre in Sydney.

This is a hands-on role for a licensed electrician who is looking for a change and wants a greater variety of work or just to work in one location! You will help maintain the fixed assets that keep a busy rail maintenance facility operating, including electrical infrastructure, buildings, lighting, overhead systems and specialist plant.

You will work a Monday-to-Friday day roster, (with overtime and some weekend shutdown work when required under a EBA). Based at our Auburn Maintenance Centre, the opportunity offers exposure to industrial equipment, asset management and contractor coordination within a highly regulated, safety-focused environment.

Safety is central to every job. You will make sure work is properly planned, permitted, isolated and completed to site requirements, while supporting contractors and responding to equipment faults that could affect operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate contractors and maintenance activities, ensuring permits, isolations, risk controls and site safety requirements are in place before work begins.
  • Respond to breakdowns, diagnose electrical and plant faults, complete practical repairs where appropriate and coordinate specialist support when needed.
  • Carry out safe switching, isolation and lockout/tagout activities on facility electrical systems in line with site procedures and authorisations.
  • Manage preventive and corrective maintenance work orders, service records and defects to improve asset reliability and reduce repeat failures.
  • Complete routine inspections and maintenance across electrical infrastructure, buildings and specialist fixed plant in a live operational environment.

What You Bring

  • A recognised electrical trade qualification and a current NSW electrical licence. This is mandatory for the role.
  • Industrial, manufacturing, rail, utilities, defence, aviation or another safety-critical maintenance background, with confidence reading wiring diagrams and fault-finding on plant and equipment.
  • A strong safety mindset, including practical experience with permits, isolations, lockout/tagout, risk assessments, SWMS or comparable safe systems of work.
  • Experience using a computerised maintenance management system such as IBM Maximo, SAP or a similar platform, with an understanding of accurate work-order and asset records.
  • High-voltage or 1500V DC overhead-line switching experience, and tickets such as EWP, forklift, scissor lift or basic rigging, will be highly regarded but are not essential. Training can be provided for suitable licensed electricians. Candidates must also be able to meet Rail Safety Worker requirements.
