Project Engineer
The Opportunity
Downer’s Energy & Utilities business is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join our Power Systems team, supporting the successful delivery of substation projects.
Reporting to the Program Manager, you will provide engineering support and schedule management while working closely with site teams, subcontractors and suppliers. This is a hands-on opportunity to coordinate construction activities, provide technical guidance and help deliver safe, high-quality project outcomes.
The role is offered on a 10 & 4 roster, providing a structured roster arrangement while contributing to technically challenging power infrastructure projects
- Coordinating site supervisors, self-perform crews and subcontractors across design, scope, program, safety, quality and environmental requirements.
- Developing detailed construction methodologies, work methods, sketches, crane lift plans and temporary works requirements.
- Reviewing designs for constructability, compliance and delivery efficiency.
- Providing technical advice and resolving day-to-day engineering and construction challenges.
- Managing project schedules, work breakdown structures, cost forecasts, quantity take-offs and progress reporting.
- Supporting contract administration, including variations, extensions of time, claims, procurement scopes and project closeout.
- Implementing project quality systems, maintaining as-built drawings, issuing RFIs and coordinating lot conformance activities.
- Identifying commercial risks, delivery opportunities and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Building effective relationships with clients, stakeholders, subcontractors and the wider project team.
- Mentoring and supporting Site Engineers to strengthen technical capability and understanding of project deliverables.
- Actively supporting Downer’s Zero Harm culture through effective risk management, safety leadership and compliance activities
What we are looking for
- A Bachelor of Engineering.
- At least four years’ relevant experience.
- Demonstrated project engineering experience.
- Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating construction activities.
- Capability across scheduling, financial management, forecasting and reporting.
- Experience with change management and contract administration.
- A strong track record of driving quality outcomes in project delivery.
- Strong organisational, analytical and time-management skills.
- The ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to transfer technical knowledge to others.
- The ability to work effectively under pressure within a changing project environment.
- Transmission industry experience will be highly regarded
