Embedded Testing Lead Engineer

Eaton’s Critical Power Solutions Division (CPS) is seeking an Embedded Testing Lead Engineer. This position can be based on a hybrid basis in Raleigh, NC or Richmond, VA. Relocation is available to Raleigh or Richmond. Some travel may be required between Raleigh and Richmond, primarily (~10%).

The expected annual salary range for this role is $105000 - $154000 a year.

What you’ll do:

Eaton's Electrical Critical Power Solutions Division designs, manufactures, and services power distribution and critical power infrastructure solutions, including Remote Power Panels (RPP), Static Transfer Switch (STS), Power Distribution Units (PDU), UPS systems, monitoring and metering equipment, and related electronic products. Our employees deliver mission-critical solutions to customers with demanding energy management requirements.

Position Overview:

This role is responsible for leading the design verification and validation (V&V), test automation, and laboratory testing activities for RPP, DCPD, and PDU products within the Critical Power Solutions organization. The position defines test strategies, develops and executes verification plans, and oversees manual and automated testing of embedded firmware, hardware, and system-level functionality.

The Lead Test Engineer provides technical leadership for validation activities, supports the development of automated test platforms and laboratory infrastructure, and ensures products meet functional, performance, reliability, safety, and regulatory requirements. The role also supports safe operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of engineering laboratory environments at Eaton Raleigh.

In this role you will:

• Define and own overall test strategies and verification approaches for RPP, STS, and PDU products.
• Lead the development of test plans, test specifications, verification matrices, procedures, and validation reports.
• Lead manual and automated testing activities for embedded firmware, controls, communication interfaces, and system-level functionality.
• Design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks using LabVIEW, TestStand, Python, Robot Framework, C#, and related technologies.
• Working with integrated development environments (IDEs) and tools: Visual Studio, LabVIEW, and NI MAX (National Instruments Measurement & Automation Explorer).
• Experience in control, test & measurement equipment related to automated software engineering for the verification and validation of electromechanical systems.
• Provide technical direction for Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL), Model-in-the-Loop (MiL), and Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) validation activities.
• Develop and support Automated Test Equipment (ATE), test carts, and laboratory validation systems.
• Oversee execution of regression, integration, system, performance, and qualification testing activities.
• Integrate automated test solutions into CI/CD environments to enable continuous testing and rapid feedback.
• Review test results, analyze failures, perform root-cause analysis, and drive defect resolution with cross-functional teams.
• Guide laboratory setup, instrumentation selection, test environment readiness, and safe operation of high-power test systems.
• Support product qualification, customer acceptance testing, UL certification, and regulatory validation activities.
• Act as the primary test representative in requirements reviews, design reviews, and architecture discussions.
• Mentor engineers and promote best practices in embedded testing, test automation, and laboratory operations.
• Collaborate with firmware, hardware, systems, manufacturing, quality, and DevOps teams to ensure successful product delivery.
• Estimate testing effort, manage schedules, identify risks, and drive continuous improvements in test processes and automation coverage.

Qualifications:

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience, OR Master’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience.
• Experience in embedded systems, firmware testing, and system level verification.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in embedded systems, firmware testing, or electrical product development.
• Hands on experience working in engineering or test lab environments.
• Experience with RPP, STS, PDU, UPS, or critical power products.
• Experience supporting product verification, regulatory compliance, and certification activities for power distribution, control, or embedded electronic products.
• Familiarity with UL, IEC, IEEE, and related industry standards, including UL 891, UL 61010 and UL1008S, and UL 62368.
• Experience with LabVIEW/TestStand architectures and automated test equipment.
• Experience with Robot Framework and CI/CD-based test automation.
• Experience with network enabled communication protocols, message queues, and databases.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of formal test procedures and reports
• Ability to manage tasks and processes required to execute testing activities efficiently
• Demonstrated awareness of safety and risk considerations associated with electrical products and high power testing
• Self motivated, proactive, detail oriented, and safety focused, with the ability to overcome obstacles and meet project schedules
• Flexibility to work varying hours during test execution, as required
