Position Overview: As a Small Business Account Manager, you will play a pivotal role in managing client relationships, ensuring policy accuracy, and supporting and delivering comprehensive risk solutions. You’ll be the go-to resource for day-to-day servicing, underwriting coordination, and identifying opportunities to enhance client coverage through cross-sell strategies.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

At all times, the Small Business Account Manager shall:

  • Client Relationship Management & Retention
    • Serve as the primary relationship contact for an assigned book of small business clients, building trust that extends well beyond individual transactions.
    • Proactively engage clients throughout the year, not only at renewal, to understand their evolving business and reinforce the value of the relationship.
    • Own the renewal relationship and retention outcome for the book, targeting a 95% or higher retention rate through consistent, high-touch client engagement.
    • Identify at-risk or dissatisfied accounts early and build proactive retention plans in partnership with the Account Executive.
  • Trusted Advisor & Coverage Guidance
    • Partner with clients to review their coverage holistically as their business evolves, rather than defaulting to status-quo renewals.
    • Coordinate with carriers and underwriters as needed to support the relationship, keeping the client's outcome and experience at the center of every interaction.
    • Stay informed on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market shifts that could affect client relationships and long-term retention.
  • Cross-Sell & Account Growth
    • Deepen understanding of each client's operations, goals, and risk profile to proactively identify and recommend complementary coverage.
    • Collaborate with the Account Executive to build and present cross-sell strategies grounded in genuine knowledge of the client's business.
  • Client Advocacy
    • Champion the client's interests internally and with carriers, using relationship insight and feedback to strengthen loyalty and satisfaction.
    • Represent the voice of the client in shaping how the agency serves and retains its small business relationships.

Secondary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Strong knowledge of commercial insurance products, underwriting practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical mindset with a focus on problem-solving and client advocacy.
  • Proficiency in insurance management systems and digital tools.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Performs duties independently with little or no supervision, operating from established directions and instructions. Decisions are made within general agency constraints and insurance laws, and require independent decision-making.
  • The position involves daily contacts with customers and carriers, which encompasses information exchange, problem solving, quoting, and/or negotiations, significant contact with customers to collect information on any changes to the customer’s characteristics and to analyze the customer’s continued exposure and tolerance to risk, as well as review coverage options and risk management/prevention strategies.
  • Thorough technical knowledge of commercial lines insurance, including an understanding of commercial insurance forms and risk alternatives. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management or related field preferred, or IRMI, PLCS or equivalent designation, with a minimum of one year in a defined insurance role.CISR designation is preferred.Must be organized with demonstrated skills for effective communication both verbal and written with the ability to influence others.Advisor I should handle renewals at a 95% retention rate, within a niche/industry focus, while maintaining positive client feedback or client satisfaction scores.This role manages a book of $300k or more in revenue, while meeting service level agreements and quality metric.Team member will be supporting department strategy and mentoring Associate Advisors.Must have and maintain an active Property and Casualty license in required states.
