EPI is a payment scheme, built by European payment industry leaders, to create Wero, a unified pan-European payment solution leveraging SCT Inst.

Be part of a movement to change the way Europe pays

In today’s digital Europe, payments still feel too complicated. Random delays, confusing rules, extra apps and accounts make it harder than it should be to pay and get paid.

The European Payments Initiative is changing that with Wero, a proudly European digital wallet to make payments easier, clearer and more secure. Online, in store, at home and across borders, with your money and data protected under European laws and regulations.

Wero is live in Belgium, France and Germany and launching very soon in Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Backed by 16 major banks and the two largest European acquirers, we’re building a brand new, proudly European payment system. Why not join us?

What's in it for you

In this role, you’ll shape the experience of Europe’s next-generation digital identity infrastructure. You’ll design and deliver world-class identity flows for EUDI and Wero, turning complex regulatory and trust-based requirements into intuitive, human-centered interfaces that millions can rely on.

You’ll lead the conception and prototyping of critical identity journeys, influence experience principles across the organisation, and help define how digital identity feels in everyday life. Working closely with Product, Engineering, Research, and Content Design in a collaborative, remote-first environment, you’ll ensure our identity solutions are secure, accessible, and empowering by design.

Our roadmap is clear: prototyping and specification run through 2026, pilot and testing follow in 2027, and then we move into integration within Wero and rollout. You’ll provide design continuity across these phases, ensuring consistency, clarity, and usability as the identity ecosystem scales.

This is a rare opportunity to become a trusted Digital Identity design reference within EPI, working alongside teams across the organisation as digital identity expands in scope and impact across Europe.

At EPI, we embrace a remote-first culture, enabling our teams to work remotely from the country they are based in, with in-person meetings at least once a quarter to foster collaboration and connection.

About the team

You will work closely with our Digital Identity Product Leader and Engineering counterparts as part of a focused Identity task force, and you will be reporting into the Head of Experience Design. From day one, you will act as the Design Lead for Identity, turning complex and sometimes ambiguous requirements into clear, implementable experience solutions and scalable design decisions.

You will be embedded in the Identity domain, working within a cross-functional product team alongside Product and Engineering. At the same time, you will be part of a wider Design organisation of around 14 people, including Product Design, Research, Content Design, and Design Operations.

While Product Designers are embedded within specific domains, disciplines such as Research, Content Design, and Operations work transversally across teams. This gives you both domain ownership and access to shared expertise, enabling strong collaboration across the organisation.

You will collaborate in a matrix setup across Europe, contributing to identity initiatives that span multiple teams and markets. As the identity roadmap progresses from prototype to pilot, and into Wero integration and rollout, you will provide design continuity and ensure experience quality across phases.

Your impact

  • Conceive, design, and deliver implementable user interface flows to create world-class payment and identity experiences for end users.

  • Present and defend product design recommendations and Wero experience principles to senior stakeholders across EPI, member banks, and merchant teams.

  • Act as a central point of contact for the EUDI European Digital Identity experience, collaborating closely with UX and Product partners to ensure solutions are fast, reliable, dynamic, and empowering.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to translate complex identity and trust requirements into clear, usable interfaces.

  • Nurture mutually respectful and collaborative relationships with EPI colleagues and extended partner teams.

  • Contribute to inclusive and accessible design practices across all solutions.

Technology stack

Figma, Slack, Miro, Microsoft Suite, Confluence, Jira.

To succeed, you should meet at least 70% of these requirements

Product Design Craft & Systems Thinking:

  • 6+ years of experience as a Product Designer in a product-led environment, with a track record of shaping complex digital products from concept to launch

  • Strong background in end-to-end product design with advanced UI design skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Figma

  • Ability to balance craft, speed, and pragmatism in a real-world product environment

  • Ability to maintain clear, well-structured design artifacts and documentation

Designing in Regulated & Trust-Critical Environments:

  • Experience translating abstract, regulatory, and trust-based requirements (e.g., digital identity, authentication, consent, privacy) into intuitive, user-centered solutions

  • Experience building to AA standard

  • Experience in payments, financial services, or fintech environments is considered a plus

Research & Evidence-Based Decision Making:

  • Qualitative and quantitative research capabilities

  • Ability to use research insights and data to inform design decisions

  • Proactive, ownership-driven mindset, comfortable navigating ambiguity

Collaboration, Communication & Stakeholder Management:

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain design decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Stakeholder management skills, including experience working with senior leaders and external partners

  • Highly collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams

  • Experience working in distributed or multi-market teams is considered a plus

  • Fluent in English (CEFR C1 or C2); French, German or Dutch or any additional European languages is a plus

If this looks like you, the recruitment steps are:

  • A first call with one of our recruiters (45 min)

  • Portfolio review + Job-Specific Skills Interview (60 min) with your hiring manager + relevant experts

  • Culture Interview (60 min) with your hiring manager + digital identity lead

  • Hopefully, an offer you can’t refuse

Turn back if …

  • You’re looking for a fully structured environment with little ambiguity and prefer clearly defined execution over discovery, exploration, and rapid prototyping.

  • You’re not comfortable taking ownership of the experience direction from day one, making decisions with incomplete information, and translating business, regulatory, or consortium requirements into clear, user-centered solutions.

  • You prefer working within a narrow scope rather than acting as a design partner who aligns stakeholders, shapes experience principles, and regularly communicates trade-offs to mixed technical and non-technical audiences.

What we can offer

  • Remote-first culture with quarterly and annual all-staff in-person meetups to keep teams connected and collaborative

  • Possibility to work from another EU country for up to 3 months per year

  • Competitive compensation package, featuring salary, performance-based bonus, and a thoughtfully designed, high-quality benefits program

  • The opportunity to be part of a multicultural European company

  • Learning & development budget: €5,000 training budget per year
