About your role

The Fairphone Software Engineering team is seeking a Open Source Software Engineer focused on AOSP and the Android ecosystem to reshape Fairphone’s ambition on open sourcing. Open source is already part of Fairphone’s mission and we’re publishing a lot of source code of our devices and apps and services. However we want to redefine how we engage with open source communities and partners and build a stronger relationship with them. You will be the main driver behind this mission: You will shape our strategy for collaborating with open source contributors especially on our device source trees. You will drive upstreaming activities towards AOSP but also community projects such as LineageOS. You will also work with current and future Android partners such as Murena, CalyxOS or Nura. Open sourcing is key to our longevity strategy and therefore also directly feeding into our environmental and social impact goals. Join us in building a fairer, more durable OS that through engagement with open source communities and partners proves high-performance technology can, and should, last.

You will report directly to our OS Longevity team Tech Lead, under our Head of Software Engineering, who reports to our CTO. You will be working next to senior engineers who focus on different parts of the mobile Android and Linux software stack.

  • Provide guidance to internal teams on open sourcing best practices and business relevance

Your Key Objectives

  • Define and implement a strategy for effective engagement with open source communities on our Android devices.

  • Engage with our open source partners and facilitate sharing sources and solutions with them.

  • Engage with our software suppliers around open sourcing requirements

  • Drive upstreaming activities especially towards AOSP to contribute to the AOSP ecosystem and make our device longevity more effective.

  • Embed your strategy within the complexities of AOSP stacks through nearly a decade of upgrades.

  • Contribute to ongoing work on maintenance, security and performance of both our own system and partner and community Android systems on our devices.

Your Skills & Experience

  • You have a degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or a similar field, or have equivalent experience in one or more of these fields.

  • You have 5+ years ofrelevant, hands-on experience in the Android ecosystem

  • You have 5+ years of experience in open-source development methodologies and thrive in a collaborative environment.

  • Any strong open source experience in other projects and communities is a bonus

  • Experience with engaging with the Android and mobile ODM ecosystem and related way of working is a bonus

  • You have strong knowledge of the core Android stacks and required programming languages, including C/C++, Rust, Java, and Kotlin.

  • You are software quality-driven, used to unit and integration testing, code review tools, and continuous integration.

  • You are familiar with basic scripting (shell), process automation (Python), and code versioning (Git).

  • You are proficient with GNU/Linux operating systems.

  • You are proficient in spoken and written English. Most of us are not native English speakers, but that’s the primary language we use internally, as well as with our teams and partners worldwide.

What Fairphone can offer you?

  • The opportunity to create an impact on the electronics industry around the world.

  • A diverse work environment full of international, passionate, warm-hearted team members.
