Assistant Controller

Description

Family Tree Farms is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, and hands-on Assistant Controller to support our accounting operations. This is a unique opportunity for an accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced, highly transactional environment and enjoys being actively involved in day-to-day accounting processes.

Unlike a traditional Assistant Controller position focused primarily on financial reporting and analysis, this role will have a strong emphasis on transactional accounting, accounts payable operations, process improvement, and team oversight.

The ideal candidate will have strong accounting fundamentals, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage high transaction volumes while maintaining accuracy and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Accounts Payable & Transactional Accounting

• Oversee daily accounts payable operations, including invoice processing, coding, approvals, payment processing, and vendor account reconciliation.
• Supervise, train, and support the Accounts Payable team to ensure timely and accurate processing.
• Manage high volumes of accounting transactions while maintaining strong internal controls and accuracy.
• Monitor outstanding invoices, vendor statements, payment schedules, and account discrepancies.
• Work closely with operations, purchasing, and other departments to resolve invoice and payment issues.
• Identify opportunities to streamline transactional processes and improve efficiencies.

Accounting Operations & Financial Support

• Assist the Controller with daily accounting operations and month-end and year-end closing activities.
• Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger transactions.
• Support financial reporting, expense tracking, and account analysis.
• Assist with maintaining internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
• Support audits by preparing documentation, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
• Assist with special accounting projects and operational reporting as needed.

Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Provide direct oversight and guidance to the Accounts Payable team.
• Establish clear expectations, monitor workloads, and ensure deadlines are met.
• Collaborate with facility management and department leaders to resolve accounting-related matters.
• Support accounting operations at both the Reedley and Kingsburg facilities as business needs require.

Work Environment & Schedule

This is a fully on-site position supporting accounting operations across Family Tree Farms' Reedley and Kingsburg facilities. The selected candidate must be flexible to report to either location based on operational needs. Remote or hybrid work arrangements are not available.

Requirements

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience, including significant accounts payable or transactional accounting responsibilities.
• Previous experience supervising or leading accounting staff.
• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and internal controls.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage competing priorities.
• Ability to work independently while remaining actively involved in daily accounting operations.
• Must be willing and able to work on-site at either the Reedley or Kingsburg facility as needed.

Preferred:

• Experience with Famous Software (agricultural accounting/ERP system) is a plus but not required.
• Experience in agriculture, food production, packinghouse operations, manufacturing, or another high-volume transactional environment.
• Experience improving accounting workflows and implementing process efficiencies.
