Position Summary:

The Division of Research at Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Comparative Medicine Animal Care Technician II in Jupiter, FL.

This position provides routine animal husbandry duties, including feeding, watering, and cage/pen cleaning, in accordance with institutional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory standards across multiple campuses.

Monitors environmental parameters and observes animals for health and well-being on workdays and weekends as per rotating weekend schedule across multiple campuses.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the sanitation and preparation of animal housing areas, support spaces, and equipment to maintain a clean and bio secure environment.
  • Provide routine animal husbandry duties, including feeding, watering, and cage/pen cleaning, in accordance with institutional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory standards across multiple campuses. Assist in the sanitation and preparation of animal housing areas, support spaces, and equipment to maintain a clean and bio secure environment. Monitors environmental parameters and observes animals for health and well-being on workdays and weekends as per rotating weekend schedule across multiple campuses.Operates cage wash, autoclaves, and related equipment. Assists with cage processing, handling biohazard materials and bedding per SOPs. Sweeps, mops, and maintains assigned rooms. Monitors and maintains equipment, reporting malfunctions or maintenance needs.
  • Maintains accurate daily records of animal census, husbandry activities, room conditions, and health observations. Supports compliance with institutional SOPs, biosecurity requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Assists veterinary staff and research personnel by administering medications and treatments, providing pre- and post-operative care, and performing tissue/sample collection or basic laboratory procedures as assigned.
  • Provides support for colony management activities, including breeding, weaning, and sexing of animals.
  • Assists with training and mentoring junior technicians in husbandry practices, handling, restraint, and routine procedures. Assigns and reviews work of other technicians by conducting daily room checks as directed by Animal Care Technician III or Facility Manager.
  • Communicates with research personnel in a service-oriented and professional manner. Participates in continuous improvement initiatives to support facility operations, animal care practices, and research services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support Comparative Medicine operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma and two years of appropriate experience; OR certification as Laboratory Animal Technician or above by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science required.

Valid Florida Driver’s License and a method of personal transportation required.

Documented proficiency in identifying common signs of illness, discomfort, or injury in laboratory animals and familiarity with anatomy, physiology, and behavior of common laboratory species required.

Experience independently performing tasks such as medication administration, anesthesia support, and euthanasia of common laboratory animal species required.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate with staff at all levels required.

Physical ability to lift 50 pounds and perform duties in environments with animal dander, noise, and odors required.

Salary:

$22.00 Hourly.
