Junior Software Developer
Reports to: Head of Technical R&D (day-to-day guidance from the senior developers)
Location: Nairobi
Gross Salary: KES 70,000 per month
About the company: Our client is a business technology solutions company based in Nairobi, Kenya. It provides queue management, digital signage, visitor management and electronic safety and security solutions, serving sectors such as healthcare, finance, education, hospitality and real estate. Its offering also includes time and attendance and hospital management systems. Developers here work on real systems used by clients across several industries.
Why this role exists
Our client's software has to keep working and keep improving as the business grows. This person helps the development team build and maintain web applications, fix defects quickly and keep the codebase clean. You will deliver well-defined work with support from senior developers, and your skills will grow with every project.
What you are expected to achieve
- Build and maintain features
- Develop assigned features and fixes using Laravel, React, Next.js and C#.
- Write clean, readable code that follows team standards.
- What success looks like: assigned tasks delivered on time, with few rework cycles after code review.
- Test, debug and resolve defects
- Test your own work, then reproduce, investigate and fix assigned bugs.
- What success looks like: defects fixed within the agreed time, and no repeat of the same defect.
- Work with databases and APIs
- Write and optimise queries in MySQL and MongoDB, and help integrate APIs, with guidance.
- What success looks like: queries and integrations that work correctly and pass review the first time.
- Collaborate and learn
- Take part in stand-ups and code reviews, and apply feedback.
- Support project managers, designers and testers to deliver features.
- What success looks like: positive review feedback, and clear improvement in code quality over time.
- Support existing applications and keep documentation current
- Handle routine support and maintenance tasks, and document what you build.
- What success looks like: support requests resolved on time, and documentation updated with every change.
Key Performance Expectations and Milestones
- First 30 days: Set up your development environment, learn the codebase, tools and team workflow, and complete your first small tasks.
- By day 90: Deliver assigned features independently with only light review, using Git and the team's coding standards correctly.
- By month 6: Own small modules end to end, with consistent quality and few defects.
- By month 12: Contribute to design discussions, need fewer review comments, and show readiness for a mid-level role.
Who we are looking for (minimum needed to achieve the above)
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related field.
- Minimum of two (2) years' experience in software development.
- Proficiency in relevant programming languages and development frameworks, such as PHP Laravel, C#, React and Next.js.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
- Experience with databases (MySQL, MongoDB), APIs and software development best practices will be an added advantage.
A portfolio of previous work is highly desirable.
