General Matter is building domestic uranium enrichment capacity to supply fuel for American nuclear reactors. The company aims to reduce dependence on foreign enrichment services, particularly Russian supply. It is an early-stage venture backed effort working with US regulators and site partners.

About the Company

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our goal is to design, build, and operate the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services in the United States.

Our mission is to restore America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel-fuel that will power AI, advanced manufacturing, critical industries, and the next generation of nuclear reactors.

Ultimately, our work will help power national ambitions and enable a high-energy society.

We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by top-tier investors. Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

We are seeking an experienced Radiation Safety Officer/Radiation Protection Manager to lead radiation protection for General Matter's UF6 operations. This role is critical to ensuring the safety of our people and the public, and to maintaining compliance with NRC, DOE, and other applicable radiation safety regulations as we scale enrichment operations in the US.

This person will be responsible for establishing and implementing our radiation protection program end-to-end, and will serve as a key resource in radiation safety management decisions across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and implement General Matter's radiation protection program, including procedures and processes supporting UF6 handling and enrichment operations
  • Ensure compliance with NRC, DOE standards (e.g., 10 CFR Part 20, ICRP, and ANSI)
  • Establish and administer ALARA principles, radiation monitoring, dosimetry, and radiological programs and controls to protect workers and the public
  • Evaluate radiological instrumentation and monitoring systems to ensure adequacy and compliance with site requirements
  • Serve as the site authority on radiation safety, advising operations, engineering, and leadership on radiological considerations and participating as a resource in radiation safety management decisions
  • Maintain close familiarity with facility operations to identify and address site-specific radiation protection concerns
  • Support licensing and regulatory interactions related to radiation protection
  • Develop and deliver training programs to personnel on radiological protection principles, standards, and procedures
  • Build and lead the radiation protection function and team over time as operations grow

Basic Qualifications

  • BS/BA or advanced degree (master’s or doctorate) in science or engineering, health physics, radiation protection, or a closely related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in radiation protection, health physics, or a closely related field.
  • Previous experience as an RSO/Radiation Protection Program Manager at an NRC-licensed facility, DOE site, national laboratory, or comparable regulated nuclear environment
  • Relevant certifications or credentials (e.g., NRRPT, CHP)
  • Direct experience with uranium (UF6/UO2) processing operations; OR equivalent experience with other highly radioactive or hazardous materials in a regulated environment
  • Skilled in interpreting radiation protection data and applicable regulations, including NRC and DOE (e.g., 10 CFR Part 20 and ANSI), and translating requirements into practical procedures
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance and access authorization

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed programs, etc.)
  • Experience standing up or significantly expanding a radiation protection program, particularly in a fast-paced, resource-constrained, or startup environment
  • Advanced degree in health physics, radiation science, or a related field

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
